Sankt Johann is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Vordereifel , which has its administrative headquarters in Mayen .

geography

Sankt Johann is located in the conservation area "Rhein-Ahr-Eifel". The Nette flows through the community to the west of the village . The residential areas Bürresheim, Hammesmühle (Löbsmühle) and Silbersand Grube also belong to Sankt Johann .

history

Sankt Johann is first mentioned in a document from 1348, but under the name "Oberbürresheim", which is derived from the nearby Bürresheim Castle or the lordship of the same name to which Sankt Johann belonged until the end of the 18th century. In the middle of the 15th century a church was built in the place, which was dedicated to John the Baptist and which finally gave the place its new name: 1473 the place name "Sankt Johann" appears for the first time in a document. From the 16th to the beginning of the 18th century, the Sankt Johann church was also the burial place for the manorial von Breidbach-Bürresheim family . The tombs and slabs of the following people have been preserved:

  • Anna von Breidbach, b. Chamberlain of Worms (d. 1562)
  • Hans Jakob von Breidbach (1552–1588)
  • Gertrud von Breidbach, b. Bell's Son (1552-1614)

In the first half of the 17th century in particular, Sankt Johann was affected by the witch hunt, which was carried out with astonishing intensity in the small lordship of Bürresheim, not least by a woman, namely the aforementioned Gertrud Schall von Bell.

In 1784 the old church was demolished due to its disrepair and a new one was built in 1784/1785. This received an extension in 1923/1924.

With the dissolution of the Old Kingdom , the Bürresheim rule also disappeared from the map. After the Congress of Vienna, Sankt Johann became part of the Prussian Mayen district . The Hochsimmer , located in the municipality, was the highest elevation in the district until the Hohe Acht took its place after the dissolution and partial integration of the Adenau district in 1932 . In keeping with the historical significance of Bürresheim Castle, Sankt Johann gave the mayor's office of the same name its name. Its administrative seat was Bell until 1898 , then Niedermendig . In 1970 the administrative unit - now called "Verbandsgemeinde Niedermendig" - was dissolved. Sankt Johann became part of the new Mayen-Land community (today the Vordereifel community ) in the Mayen-Koblenz district, and the Nitz district was renamed Mayen .
