Brey is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Rhein-Mosel community .

geography

Brey is located near Koblenz on the Rhine opposite Braubach , where the Marksburg is located. Neighboring towns are Spay (upstream) and the city of Rhens (downhill). The Siebenborn district belongs to Brey .

history

Brey was already settled in the Stone Age, as various archaeological finds, including flint artifacts, show. An elaborate underground aqueduct in qanat construction comes from Roman times , which suggests a greater Roman presence. In fact, a Roman country estate (Villa rustica) has been found in the outskirts of Brey and the location of a Roman fort is suspected on the Tauberbach. Brey was halfway between the Roman forts in Koblenz ( Confluentes ) and Boppard ( Fort Boppard ), near another manor near Spay . It stands to reason that a supply station was built here, but there is no evidence for this.

The first written mention of Breys (Bruone) comes from the year 821, when it appears together with Spay (Speyen) in a deed of gift. The place was owned by various landlords, including the Lords of Eppstein and the Bishop of Worms, but as part of the parish of Niederspay initially belonged administratively to the Boppard Empire , whose northern border ran at Brey, and after its pledging to Archbishop Balduin to the Electorate of Trier Boppard.

Like the other areas on the left bank of the Rhine , Brey was occupied by French revolutionary troops in 1792 and later annexed to France. During this time it became part of the Mairie Rhens in the canton of Boppard . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Rhineland became Prussian and Brey part of the new Boppard mayor in the Sankt Goar district . The place remained there until the administrative reform in 1969, when the St. Goar district was dissolved and Brey was spun off from Boppard together with Spay. After it was initially directly connected to the Koblenz district , in 1970 it became part of the new Rhens Association in the Mayen-Koblenz district.

Since June 2005, numerous sights in the Breyer area have been provided with information plaques as part of the reopening of the Brey-Spay-Jakobsberg cultural trail . In addition to the Iron Age barrows, the Roman aqueduct is also integrated, which was located in the 19th century, but was not scientifically processed until after 1963.
