Burgen is a municipality on the Lower Moselle in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Rhein-Mosel community , which has its administrative headquarters in Kobern-Gondorf . Castles is a state-approved resort .

Burgen is located at the mouth of the Baybach in the Moselle .

Burgen was first mentioned in 928 in a land loan document ( Prekarie ) of Duke Giselbert of Lorraine with Trier's Archbishop Ruotger of Trier . The place was probably settled earlier, as Roman and Celtic remains were found during construction work.

Until 1780, Burgen belonged to the "Dreiherrischen" condominium Beltheimergericht , after which it was divided into Kurtrier . The collegiate monastery of Münstermaifeld had property in the place and exercised pastoral care until the half of the 16th century . Other landowners were the dioceses of Cologne and Trier, various monasteries and monasteries that gave the regional noble families administrative and fiefdom functions.

The district of Rome to the right of the Baybach , formerly also Roma, Room, Rhom, was a place in the court and administrative district of Gallscheidergericht until the end of the Electoral Trier rule in 1798 . The largest landowner was the St. Kastor Abbey in Koblenz .

After the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops (1794), Burgen came to France and belonged to the canton of Treis in the Rhine-Moselle department from 1798 to 1814 . Burgen became the chief town ( chef-lieu ) of a Mairie in 1800 , to which Brodenbach , Dommershausen , Macken and Morshausen also belonged.

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , the region was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815. Under the Prussian administration castles belonged to the mayor Brodenbach in 1816 formed district Sankt Goar in Koblenz .

The place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 and has belonged to the Mayen-Koblenz district since 1970 .

In December 1993, Burgen suffered from the flood of the century , which flooded parts of the village.

Fritz Martin Bär (FWG Burgen) became the local mayor of Burgen in 2014. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office for another five years with a share of the vote of 83.25%.

Attractions

The Bischofstein Castle is located on the opposite side of the Moselle on the western shore on a rocky spur. The Paulus Chapel from the 13th century is located below Burg Bischofstein . There are many Moselle half-timbered houses in the village, some of which have been well preserved or have been restored. Some of the old buildings are empty and in danger of falling into disrepair. But the tithe houses of the Eltzer and Waldecker are preserved.

Festivals

  • Probably the biggest festival of castles is the Schützenfest. It always takes place on the first weekend in August. Until 2006 the festival was celebrated on the large Mosel meadow. From 2007 the Schützenbrüder celebrated their party at the end of castles at the sports field and the shooting hall.
  • On the first weekend of September, the bikers from the ARK (Alpen Räum Kommando - Burgen) invite you to the bike festival. The festival takes place in the Baybachtal on the Trimmdichplatz.

Infrastructure

Burgen is located directly on the federal road 49 Koblenz - Treis-Karden - Cochem. Buses that connect the Moselle communities with the city run between Koblenz and Burgen. Until the 20th century Burgen could also be reached via a train station on the Moselle route Koblenz - Treis-Karden - Cochem on the other bank of the Moselle near Burg Bischofstein .
