Life

Ruotger came from a noble family in Lorraine. 916 he was in the office of Chancellor of the West Franconian King Karl III. called, which he held until 923. In the following years he was an important player in Lorraine politics. The highlight of his activity was the termination of the Bonn Treaty . The East Franconian King Henry I united Lorraine with Eastern Franconia in 925 .

In 927 Ruotger is attested as Arch Chancellor of the East Franconian Empire.

After the devastating Norman and Hungarian invasions, his ecclesiastical activity was the reconstruction and reorganization of the Trier diocese. Around the year 927 he convened a provincial synod in which, in addition to the highest clergy, the suffragan bishops of Metz , Toul and Verdun as well as other clergy from the metropolitan association took part. The archbishop gave his clergy a collection of canons as a measure and guide for the right exercise of office by all clergymen, which is closely based on the capitular of Archbishop Radulf von Bourges (840-866). This guideline was firmly established in letters to his clergy. Archbishop Rudgar signed many loan and lease agreements with his vassals and others, such as a precarious or land loan agreement in 928 with Duke Giselbert of Lorraine (French: Gislebert de Lotharingie ) in castles on the Moselle , which was then called the "castle in the Maifelder Grafschaft" for the first time was mentioned in a document.

Rudgar died in early 931 and was buried in a chapel next to the St. Paulin Collegiate Church in Trier . His name, his office as archbishop and the date of death could still be read in the 17th century. His burial chapel was consecrated to St. Walburgis ( Walburga , Waldpurgis) in later years .
