Urmitz (dialect: Örms) is a municipality on the Rhine in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Weißenthurm .
Geographical location
The municipality of Urmitz is located directly on the Rhine between Andernach and Koblenz . The Rhine island Urmitzer Werth ( bird sanctuary ) is located in the Rhine in front of the town , but it belongs to the Neuwied district. In the east Urmitz borders on the municipality of Kaltenengers , which is also in the district of Mayen-Koblenz , in the south on Mülheim-Kärlich and in the west on Weißenthurm .
According to statistics, there are 3,437 people in Urmitz in 1,658 inhabited addresses, spread across 53 streets. The proportion of foreigners is around 6.2%. About 70% of the population belong to the Roman Catholic, 9.5% to the Protestant Church. (As of August 2010)
history
During the pumice quarrying near the village, an interrupted earthwork of the early Neolithic Michelsberg culture measuring approx. 1250 × 800 meters was discovered. During excavations around 1900, the remains of a Roman bridge were found that were connected with the crossing of the Rhine by Julius Caesar's troops in 53 BC. BC, mentioned by Caesar in his work “ De Bello Gallico ”.
The Franconian royal estate was first mentioned in documents as villa Auromoncio quod est prope litora Rheni fluvii 755 & 757. It came into the possession of the Bamberg Cathedral monastery through a donation from Emperor Heinrich II . Later the place came to the Electorate of Trier , until its end in 1794, and after the Napoleonic rule in 1815 to the Prussian Rhine Province .
The parish of the place has been documented since 1204. Today's St. George's Church dates from 1722, the rectory from 1810.

Community partnerships
Urmitz has had a good partnership with the French community of Les Noes near Paris for several years .
There has also been an informal friendship with the Scottish community of Maybole for years . The friendship is shown first and foremost in the annual visit of the bagpipers of the Maybole Pipe Band from the city of Maybole ( South Ayrshire ) to the Carnival in Urmitz and the participation in the Rose Monday procession .

Buildings
The baroque church , consecrated to St. George , was built in 1772, the rectory at the beginning of the 19th century.
The Urmitz railway bridge , built in 1918 as the so-called Kronprinzenbrücke, crosses the Rhine near Urmitz . The steel structure was blown up by the German Wehrmacht in March 1945 as they retreated from the American advance . After the war the bridge was rebuilt.

The fair takes place annually on the Sunday after St. George's Day (April 23). This tradition goes back to the 17th century, the first secular fair took place towards the end of the 19th century. The fair is organized in honor of the local patron St. Georg by the "Bachelor Association 1872 Urmitz". In addition to the bachelor club, there are also two year groups associated with the fair. The "Schorsch class" and the "Schieß class" are two consecutive years that take on different tasks during the fair. The main task of the "Schorsch class" is to carry the St. George figure in the procession that takes place on the Sunday of the fair. The “shooting year” builds the egg crown with the motto, organizes the raffle and shoots at different times with the cannons called “Katzenköpp”. In addition to the St. George figure, which is carried during the church procession, there has also been a fair tree since 1920, which has been adorned with an annually new and unique egg crown since 1945. Shooting with the "cat's head" has also been a tradition since the 1920s.
Sports
There is a sports club in Urmitz, the SV Urmitz 1913/1970 e. V. The SV Urmitz is the amalgamation of the two sports clubs FC and TV Urmitz. The sports boules, cheerleading, fitness, soccer, gymnastics / dance, handball, judo, athletics, chess, tennis, table tennis and volleyball are offered in 12 departments.
Handball has a long tradition and has long been represented in the top leagues. Urmitz played for many years in the league and at times even in the regional league . Before the 2007/08 season, the handball department of SV Urmitz merged with that of TV Vallendar and played until the 2008/09 season under the name UVS Rheintal (UVS = Urmitz Vallendarer Spielgemeinschaft) in the RPS-Oberliga. Before the 2009/2010 season, the syndicate split. After the separation, the team played in the Rhineland League under the old and new name SV Urmitz.
Judo has another great tradition in Urmitz. The most famous judoka is Stefan Dott , who u. a. started at the Olympics. At times the Urmitzer judoka fought in the regional league, most recently as a fighting community with Neuwied. For several years, however, popular sport has been the focus. But here too there have been many successes, especially in the youth field.
Ata Urmitz's Turkish football team has been based in Urmitz since 1981. She plays in the district league center and achieved some successes, namely the three-time district championship in the C-class, B-class and two district cup finals. These and other sports are preferred in the Peter-Häring-Halle. There is also a boules court and tennis court. Since the summer of 2011, the community has had a modern artificial turf pitch with a tartan track.
Youth work
The youth work in Urmitz is mainly carried out by the association youth project “That's it”, which is responsible for youth work in all communities of the association Weißenthurm .
There are several facilities for young people and children in Urmitz. The old somewhat smaller sports field was taken out of service after the construction of a new one and converted into a popular football field. In the Urmitz sports center, a skate park with a halfpipe , grind bars and many other things has been built for the youngsters .
In the St. Georg elementary school there is a new children's and youth club with an internet café, which was set up in December 2013 and which is often used as a meeting point.
Other youth communities are, for example, the St. George Scouts , who are very popular and take part in many social and charitable activities every year.

Urmitz was originally characterized by agriculture. Thanks to its location in the immediate vicinity of the commercial areas of the cities of Koblenz , Mülheim-Kärlich , Weißenthurm , Andernach and Neuwied , businesses have also settled in Urmitz. On the edge of the Mülheim-Kärlich industrial area lies the Rudolf-Diesel-Straße industrial area in the municipality of Urmitz, where more and more industrial and commercial companies have settled in recent years.
Despite its proximity to the Mülheim-Kärlich industrial park, there are all the necessary shopping opportunities in the town center: several grocery stores, post offices, pharmacies, doctors, banking and insurance branches, hairdressers and restaurants.

- Rail transport
There are two train stops where only regional trains stop.
On the one hand there is the Urmitz station on the left Rhine route , which runs hourly from the Mittelrheinbahn RB 26 (Cologne Messe / Deutz – Bonn – Remagen – Andernach – Koblenz – Bingen (Rh) –Mainz) and the Lahn-Eifel-Bahn RB 23 (Mayen Ost – Mendig – Andernach – Koblenz – Bad Ems – Diez – Limburg) is served. On the other hand, there is the Urmitz Rheinbrücke stop on the Neuwied – Koblenz line , on which the RE 8 regional express line (Koblenz – Neuwied – Cologne – Mönchengladbach) operates.
The latter stopping point was put into operation on September 15, 1935. When the Kronprinz-Wilhelm-Brücke was destroyed by the retreating German troops in 1945 , rail traffic at this stopping point also came to a standstill. It was only between 1952 and 1954 that the bridge was rebuilt under the name Urmitzer Eisenbahnbrücke and the line could be put into operation here. Between 1987 and 2006 the breakpoint was closed again. Since its reopening, it has been approached every hour by the RE 8 trains on the right bank of the Rhine .

In 2011, a motorhome parking space was inaugurated in the municipality of Urmitz. The 24 parking spaces are in a semicircle on the Rhine.
