The Handball-Oberliga (OL) is the fourth highest division in German handball below the Bundesliga , the 2nd Bundesliga and the 3rd Leagueand the top division of the national associations for men and women. The majority of the upper leagues are operated jointly by several regional associations, the upper leagues North Sea and Lower Saxony are also organizationally linked (joint scheduling, same implementation rules). The upper league areas of Bavaria and Hesse are not exactly identical to the association area (teams from the Hessian district of Odenwald / Spessart are partially assigned to the Bavarian upper league area). Thus, the HV Westphalia is the only regional association whose upper league is exactly congruent with its association area.

designation

From 2010 to 2016, the designation Oberliga for this division level was specified in the game rules of the German Handball Federation (Section 38). Since the 2016/17 season, the national associations are responsible for naming them. The associations Niederrhein and Mittelrhein refer to their joint fourth league , which was introduced this season, as the regional league , the designation Oberliga is instead used in the two associations for the next lower, i.e. fifth highest division. This means that the designation Oberliga is no longer analogous to the classification as the fourth-highest division. The term regional league is also used for the first time for a fourth-highest division. Previously, nationwide, the second highest (1969–1981) and third highest (1981–2010) league were temporarily designated as such.

Ascent and descent

The respective champions are determined in a two-round league system in which all teams in the respective relays and age groups compete against each other in home and return games. The champions as well as the runner-up of the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg as well as all other Oberliga champions climb regularly into the 3rd division. Depending on the substructure, two to four teams are usually relegated from the major leagues. As of the 2016/17 season, there are 22 leagues in a total of 27 seasons below the Oberliga (one league per state association, including Westphalia, Bavaria, Württemberg with 2 seasons each, Hesse with 3 seasons), each of which is given different names.

structure

The Oberliga is currently played in twelve areas with eleven leagues (women twelve up to 2016/17, then the North Rhine Regional League will also be established here , see above). Areas 10 (Baden / Südbaden) and 11 (Württemberg) operate a joint Baden-Württemberg-Oberliga (BWOL), from which two teams are promoted to the 3rd division:
