A structural reform in the HVSH in 2007 meant that the four district associations that had existed until then were dissolved. The districts can set up overarching game classes within their region (district upper leagues).
The HVSH belonged to the North German Handball Association until 1991 and to the Northeast German Handball Association until 2011 .
League system
From 1981 to 2010 the highest class of the association was the four-class Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein. After the disbandment of the districts in 2007, there are three national leagues under the former Oberliga, which are played in the seasons North (usually includes the regions North and North Sea), Middle (Middle, Förde) and South (Baltic Sea, South), which usually consist of 14 teams. There is a different number of regional leagues among the national leagues, which form the top division of the regions.
As of 2010/11, the association's highest class, the Schleswig-Holstein League , is now only a fifth class and is located directly under the Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein Oberliga .
