The Handball Association Saar (HVS) is one of six state associations that belonged to the Southwest German Handball Association . The HVS includes all handball clubs from Saarland as well as the VTZ Saarpfalz , SV Zweibrücken , HSV Waldmohr and TV-Birkenfeld / Nohfelden from Rhineland-Palatinate.

Well-known clubs

Men

The best-known club among men is TV Niederwürzbach , which played in the Bundesliga for ten years . He was twice German runner-up and won the City Cup . The TuS 1860 Neunkirchen also played two years in the Bundesliga and several years in the Regionalliga Southwest . The TV / TSV Erbach was three times Southwest German champion, took part twice in the final round of the German handball championship (best placement 5th place, 1963), narrowly missed promotion to the Bundesliga three times and played for many years in the Regionalliga Südwest (also in field handball ) . SC Saargold Lisdorf played from 1981 to 1985 and from 2009 to 2018 (as HG Saarlouis ) in the 2nd Bundesliga and has been active in the 3rd League South since the 20018/19 season. The TV Altenkessel also played the 2nd Bundesliga and Regional League for several years.

Women

The only women's Bundesliga team in Saarland was SV St. Ingbert , who played in the top tier twice for a year, but was relegated straight away. The DJK Marpingen and TuS Neunkirchen both played several years in the 2. Bundesliga .

Rhineland-Palatinate associations at the HVS

Since the distances in Saarland, especially in the youth sector, are much shorter than in other regional associations, three clubs from the Palatinate directly on the border and one club from the Rhineland have been playing for the Saarland handball association for several years . While HSV Waldmohr , which has since entered into a syndicate with the neighboring club SSV Erbach to HWE Homburg , has been officially playing in Saarland since its inception, with the consent of the Palatinate Handball Association (PfHV), TV Birkenfeld has registered and plays in the neighboring Nohfelden now as the Saarland association "TV-Birkenfeld / Nohfelden". The two clubs from Zweibrücken, VTZ and SV64, have registered in neighboring Homburg , for which the VTZ even changed its name to "VTZ Saarpfalz".

Divisions of the HVS

The top division of the HVS is the Saarland League for both men and women. Above it there is (for the HVS area, from top to bottom) the Bundesliga, the second Bundesliga, the third division and the Oberliga RPS , the joint Oberliga of the HVS, Palatinate Handball Association , Rheinhessen and Rhineland Handball Association . The 5 German regional leagues played their last season in 2009/2010, as they were replaced by four third leagues. Since these are without fixed association boundaries, it is not clear which group qualified HVS teams would come into. Since the division is geographical, a team from the west of the association could well be in a different season than one from the east.
