Franciszek Gągor (born September 8, 1951 in Koniuszowa , Poland ; † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk , Russia ) was Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces from 2006 until his death .

Life and career

Gągor studied at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and graduated with a master's degree in 1983 . He then completed postgraduate studies at the University of Breslau , which he finished in 1984.

1973 Gągor finished the officers school in Wroclaw. From 1976 to 1977 he was deployed in Egypt as part of the United Nations Emergency Force II . In 1977 he became head of the Polish logistics division ( Pollog ) as part of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force ( UNDOF ). In the following year he became a lecturer at a school for mechanized infantry and remained so until 1988. At the same time he was used again in the framework of the UNDOF in 1980 and 1985 to 1986, this time as commander of the Polish troops. From 1988 to 1990 Gągor was an officer for combat training . From 1989 to 1990 he was again employed for UNDOF, as deputy logistics officer. From 1991 to 1992 Gągor was responsible for the management of peacekeeping operations in the Ministry of Defense. In 1991 he became deputy commander of the Polish troops in the Gulf and during the Second Gulf War Franciszek Gągor became deputy sector commander of the troops stationed in Kuwait as part of the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission ( UNIKOM ). From 1992 he was back in the Ministry of Defense , as head of peacekeeping operations. From 1994 to 1996, Gągor was Deputy Director of Foreign Operations and Head of the Arms Control and Peacekeeping Department. From 1996 to 1999 he was employed as director for foreign assignments. In 1997 he was promoted to brigadier general. 1998 doctorate Franciszek Gągor with the work International peace operations as well as its place in the current defense doctrine of the Republic of Poland . In 1999 he became the head of military operations in the Polish General Staff . In 2003 he became Assistant to the Secretary General of the United Nations in Iraq for UNIKOM. From 2003 to 2004 he was assistant to the Secretary General again within the UNDOF. From 2004 to 2006 he was Poland's representative in NATO and the European Union . On February 27, 2006 he was promoted to lieutenant general ( generał broni ) and head of the general staff of the Polish army . On May 3, 2006, he was promoted to general.

On April 10, 2010, Gągor was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński , who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the Katyn massacre . However, in a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , he was killed along with other high-ranking representatives of Poland.

Franciszek Gągor was married and had two children.
