The Bavarian Handball Association eV (BHV) was founded in 1946 and is a regional association within the German Handball Federation (DHB). It represents the basic values of handball in Bavaria and the interests of its members. The association colors are white-blue.

History of Bavarian handball

After the end of the Second World War , handball player Ludwig Lehmaier brought the Munich handball clubs together to organize the game in two classes for men. On July 18, 1945, the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) was founded in Munich .

1946 to 1955

Starting from Munich, the organization spread throughout Bavaria. In the spring of 1946 handball was resumed on the still existing sports fields. In the years that followed, the increase in the number of new player passes made the upswing of handball in Bavaria clear. The first thematic day took place on June 8, 1947 in Munich. At the third handball day of May 8, 1949, the handball division of the Bavarian State Sports Association was converted into the Bavarian Handball Association (BHV) as a sub-organization of the BLSV. It was determined that the association day should be held every two years. In addition, gaming operations were restructured. The Bavarian Oberliga was established as the highest league and downgraded across national classes, districts and districts. In addition, it was stipulated that every member club had to obtain the “General Sports Communication (ASM)” - the information sheet of the BLSV. On the 1st Association Day of the BHV, which took place on February 11, 1951, the reorganization of the BHV was decided. Here, the more technically oriented state game management was divided into administrative and technical functions. The executive suburb took the place of the state game management. This was supported by the technical committee. A statute committee was set up, which had the task of creating new association handball regulations. In the same year, the districts (today: districts) Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria were merged. In 1951, the total pass requirement was introduced, with the result that only those who were able to show their pass to the referee before the start of the game were eligible to play. The Grünwald sports school was opened in the same year as the central Bavarian training facility. Especially from 1952 the Bavarian handball players managed to bring various successes and titles to Bavaria. The Bavarian team rushed from victory to victory and remained unbeaten in four years and eleven games. The women's team of the Post SV Munich (formerly VfL Munich ) continued its winning sequence and was South German champions without interruption from 1948 to 1957. At the 5th Association Day on February 14 and 15, 1953, which took place in the Munich Grünwald sports school, it was decided that the regional league should be divided into two groups of 12 teams each. Due to the good development of handball in Bavaria, the DHB awarded the Germany-Austria international match to Augsburg. This game went down as the "dream game" of the German national team in the history of handball in the post-war period.

1956 to 1965

At the 7th day of the association on February 23 and 24, 1957, chairman Ludwig Lehmaier did not stand for re-election for health reasons after twelve years in office. Otto Seeber was elected as his successor.

In order to honor the achievements of the Bavarian Handball Association, the DHB transferred the organization of its Bundestag to the BHV. This took place in November 1959 in Würzburg. In 1963, the Aschaffenburg district was assigned to the State Association of Hesse for technical purposes.

1966 to 1975

The 12th Association Day took place on March 4th and 5th, 1967 in Rothenburg. The focus was on the resignation of Otto Seeber, who was elected as its President on April 23, 1966 at the Bundestag of the DHB. His previous deputy Konrad Wagner took office as his successor. The handball Bundesliga was introduced in the same year. TSV Zirndorf from the southern group took part. By winning all three possible titles in 1969, the women's team of 1. FC Nürnberg made it to the top of the most successful German teams in women's handball. In recognition of this achievement, the DHB awarded two international matches to Bavaria. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the BHV acted as a co-organizer, since indoor handball (small field) was Olympic for the first time.

1976 to 1985

In 1976 the BHV provided most of the players in the German national youth team. In the same year, the male youth A of TUSPO Nuremberg won the German championship and thus laid the foundation for a later Bundesliga team. The Bavarian referee team Klaus Böttcher and Willi Hackl was added to the IHF referee squad in 1979. In the same year Manfred Hofmann from Großwallstadt received the award for " Handball Player of the Year 1979 ". In the following year the readers of the German Handball Week voted TVG as “Team of the Year 1980” and Anni Placht as “Handball Woman of the Year”.

On the 19th Association Day of the BHV on March 14 and 15, 1981 it was decided that the Association Day should be held every three years from now on. Furthermore, Gerd Tschochohei was appointed national coach of the German handball women. Erhard Wunderlich was voted "Handball Player of the Year" in 1981 and 1982. A year later, the youth team of the CSG Erlangen won the German B youth championship. At the 20th Association Day on March 17 and 18, 1984, the previous Vice President Otto Hezner was elected President as successor to Willi Jödicke. In the same year Willi Jödicke became chairman of the South German Handball Association .

1986 to 1995

After a speaker with responsibility for mini handball had been elected a year earlier, the BHV's first mini game festival took place in 1987. In 1988, for the first time in the history of the BHV, an extraordinary association day had to be convened because Otto Hezner had to resign from his position as president for health reasons. Gerd Tschochohei was elected as his successor and thus the sixth President. In the 1989/1990 season the possibility was created to call up the results of the Regionalliga-Süd and the Bavarian Oberliga via the teletext page of Bavarian TV . Gunther van der Heuvel joined the BHV as the first full-time trainer in November 1990. At the 23rd day of the association on March 6th and 7th, 1993, the BHV introduced the department principle, in which each vice president heads a department (finance, law, gaming, teaching and education). In the same year, a new youth regulation was adopted, with the aim of involving young people more in the formation of opinions and in decisions that affect the youth sector.

In cooperation with the DHB, the BHV declared 1994 the "year of women's handball". In the same year the BHV Presidium appointed a public relations officer and a marketing committee. Thus the association and the office changed more and more into a service company for the districts, districts and associations. In order to be able to further promote youth work, the Executive Committee appointed a consultant for interdisciplinary youth work in 1995. In cooperation with the BLSV and the Bavarian Sports Youth (bsj), the BHV started a course for young people to become club assistants.

1996 to 2005

For the 50th anniversary in 1996, the BHV presented its new logo. The following year the focus was on implementing structural reform. Here, the game and administrative level "district" was abolished without replacement, the association area was divided into eight equally large districts and the decision-making bodies were reduced in size. In June 1998 the homepage of the BHV was put online, which made it possible to access information about the BHV, results and tables. In the same year, the previous nine districts were limited to today's eight districts and an officer for organization and communication was appointed. At the 25th day of the association in 1999, the new version of the finance and referee regulations was approved. The B-youth of TV Kirchzell won the German championship title in the same year.

The Bavarian selection of the female youth B (born in 1984) won the championship title in the 2001 regional cup. Due to the currency conversion in 2002, the BHV statutes and regulations had to be adapted to the euro. In the same year 1. FC Nürnberg was promoted to the women's Bundesliga. In June 2003 the new passport program system started in the BHV office. This meant that players' IDs could also be requested online. The BHV made Tanja Bräutigam managing director on January 1st, 2004. After her resignation on January 1, 2005, René Kukatsch took over the management of the office for the next eight months. As his successor, Andreas Wäschenbach took up the post of managing director on September 15, 2005. Due to the enormous increase in children and young people, the BHV exceeded 90,000 members for the first time.

Since 2006
  • In 2006, uniform competition structures for children and young people were set up in Germany as a whole in order to promote offensive defensive behavior. In 2008, the Bavarian Handball Association created a position for a voluntary social year in its office for the first time . This was primarily used for child and youth work and cooperation with schools. In the same year, the BHV offered a teacher training course across Bavaria with the motto "Playing with hand & ball in primary school" in order to get primary school students excited about handball. In order to make the information about the Bavarian handball sport more up-to-date and clearer, the concept and design of the homepage has been redesigned. BHV Marketing GmbH was founded in 2010. This deals with the marketing of rights, the planning and execution of sports events, advertising measures and sponsoring. In the same year, the BHV was able to win Hummel and Rehband as the official supplier. With the vice-president for women's issues and equality, the BHV started the project "Fair Play on the sidelines" to make it clear to the younger athletes that it is not just about winning, but rather that the focus should be on having fun with handball.
  • The association began 2011 with a new competitive sports concept for youngsters. The scope of training should be increased through earlier sightings for Bayern selection, in order to enable easier entry into the national squad. In the same year the youth league for male A youth was introduced and Susanne Prinz became the new managing director of the BHV office.
  • In 2012, three Bavarian clubs were awarded the DHB seal of approval for “excellent youth work”, the premiere went to TSV Ismaning . In the 2013 “Handball Stars Go to School” competition, the 25 winning schools were able to look forward to an eventful day with an exclusive training session with a handball star. In 2013, the BHV awarded the sponsorship prize for excellent work with children and young people for the first time.

For the 2011/12 season, the Bundesliga for male youth A was introduced by the DHB. The Bundesliga for female youth A was adopted by the youth sports committee of the German Handball Federation. It started playing for the first time in the 2013/14 season with those born in 1995/96, from a Bavarian perspective, TSV Ismaning was there in the first two years .

Talent promotion

In the performance comparison of the federal states in the Olympic cycle from 2008 to 2012, the male selection reached 5th place and the female 4th place. In the overall comparison, Bavaria came in fourth. This result is of particular importance, since in the state of Bavaria, compared to the other states, no club is represented in the Bundesliga. In other words, the BHV has excellent youth and talent promotion up to the age of 16. Due to the lack of Bundesliga teams, a deficit in funding up to the age of 23 becomes clear, which the BHV is trying to compensate for through cooperation with the TV Großwallstadt Junior Academy. The introduction of the new competitive sports concept was fully implemented in 2014, optimizing the individual training of the talents.
