The Association for Physical Exercise 1874 Günzburg , or VfL Günzburg for short , is a sports club from the Bavarian city of Günzburg .

The club became known nationwide for its handball department . The first men's team celebrated their greatest successes in the 1980s. For the 1980/81 season , the team rose to the 1st league and finished eighth in the table at the end of the season. In the same season, the team trained by Josip Milković came to the final of the DHB Cup . Günzburg won the first leg with 19:15, but lost the second leg at TuS Nettelstedt with 22:17. Since Nettelstedt won the European Cup Winners 'Cup in the same season , Günzburg was able to take part in the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1981/82 season. The team made it to the semi-finals. There Günzburg met SC Empor Rostock . The away game was lost at 17:24 and a 22:19 success in their own hall was not enough to advance.

At the end of the 1983/84 season Günzburg only occupied 13th place in the table and was relegated to the second to last in the 2nd handball Bundesliga . In the following season the promotion succeeded again, but in 1985/86 with the 12th place in the table the relegation followed.

From the 2009/10 season, the first men's team at VfL Günzburg played in the regional league until they were promoted to the Bavarian regional league in 2015.

In the 2013/14 season, the male A-youth of VfL Günzburg played in the Bundesliga for the first time .

This was achieved again in the 2014/15, 2017/18 and 2019/2020 seasons.

The first men's handball team has been playing in the 3rd division since the 2020/21 season .
