Niederfell is a municipality on the Terrassenmosel in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Rhein-Mosel community , which has its administrative headquarters in Kobern-Gondorf .

Niederfell is located on the right bank of the Moselle about 17 kilometers from Koblenz and about 33 kilometers from Cochem . Neighboring communities are Oberfell upstream and Dieblich downstream . Opposite is Gondorf, a district of the municipality of Kobern-Gondorf .

The Kühr district and some farms on the Moselle heights belong to Niederfell.

history

Niederfell was presumably already settled in Roman times. However, there are only few finds from this period.

Niederfell is mentioned as Velle in two documents from Archbishop Poppo of Trier about donations to the Abbey of Sankt Marien , one of which is dated 1030 . The documents refer to an older document of Archbishop Egbertus from the year 980. This indicates that the place existed as early as 980.

Lower part of the fur kurtrierischen Official Munstermaifeld and included after Trier fire book 1563 (ed. By S. Brommer 166) 33 hearths (approximately households). At that time the Trier Cathedral Monastery had the right to appoint the mayor of the court. As a “Vogtjunker”, Emmerich von Eltz received two loads of wine a year.

During the Thirty Years' War, the place was destroyed several times. For this reason, no medieval buildings have survived. In 1798 the then Mairie Niederfell came to the canton of Boppard . In the course of the Prussian administrative reorganization, the place came to the mayor's office Brodenbach and the district of Sankt Goar . Niederfell has been part of the Mayen-Koblenz district since 1970.

Municipal council

The council in Niederfell consists of 16 council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Arnold Herrmann became the local mayor of Niederfell in 2014 after he won the re-election on October 26, 2014. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office for another five years with a share of 93.10% of the votes. Arnold Herrmann's predecessor was Heinz-Jürgen Meidt.

Since the local jubilee in 1980, when Niederfell celebrated its 1000th anniversary, the community has had a coat of arms. The blue post in the middle reminds of the only proven noble family in Niederfell, the Niederfell doll (probably extinct in 1364). The red lance and the bishop's staff stand for the parish patron Lambertus , while the red key refers to Saint Peter as the patron saint of Trier. For centuries, the Trier cathedral chapter owned the largest Kühr winery.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The parish church of St. Lambertus was built in 1792 with a ridge turret and expanded in 1871 and 1872. The tower dates from 1955. The baroque altar group from 1773, which originally stood in the Premonstratensian monastery in Mariaroth , today a district of Dieblich , and was destroyed by the French in 1794 thanks to the courageous intervention of some Niederfell citizens, is worth seeing could be saved.

The Winzerhöfefest takes place annually in summer.
Every year on the weekend of Pentecost, the fire brigade festival of FF Niederfell takes place.

Niederfell belongs to the "Burg Cochem wine-growing area " in the Moselle growing region . There are three wine-growing businesses in the village, the area under vines is 15 hectares. About 90% of the wine grown are white grape varieties (as of 2007).

The B 49 Koblenz Treis-Karden - Cochem runs through the village along the right bank of the Moselle . There is a regular bus connection in the direction of Koblenz and Burgen . The ferry connection to Gondorf was stopped in autumn 1974 after the bridge between Löf and Alken was built. Since 1977 there has been a bridge connection between Niederfell and Kobern-Gondorf, where there is a train station on the Moselle route Koblenz - Treis-Karden - Trier.

Facilities

In the district of Kühr there is a large care center for people with intellectual disabilities under the direction of the servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . This was inaugurated as the Herz-Jesu-Haus Kühr nursing home in 1900 .

education

The place has its own primary school run by the local community. It is a so-called dwarf school . The children in the first and second grades and the children in the third and fourth grades are taught together in only two classrooms.
