history

First documents up to the 10th century

The story of Nachtsheim begins more than 1000 years ago. At the time of Archbishop Hetti of Trier (814–847), Nachtsheim had a parish church. As a result of the high medieval clearing period of the forest areas west of Mayen, villages emerged as part of the settlement, and the new habitat was filled with people. In this space between Elz and the Hohe Acht, the first parish was Nachtsheim. The so-called parish appointment of Archbishop Ruotbert of Trier (931–956) for the church of Nachtsheim ( Natisheim ) is the earliest written evidence of the settlement of this area.

11th to 16th centuries

The document was initially incorrectly dated to around the year 950. Unmasked as a forgery, it is recognized by research as a document of the late 11th century. This document shows that the church in Welcherath was subordinated to the Stephanskirche in Nachtsheim. Their parish has already been delimited from Ruotbert's predecessor, the aforementioned Archbishop Hetti. The use of the Nachtsheimer Pfarrsprengels was left to the brothers of the Münstermaifelder Stift . The Nachtsheimer Pfarrsprengel (the territorially limited area of a parish or community in the Christian churches) comprised the following area oriented towards natural borders such as watercourses and mountains, as well as man-made paths and roads: the Karbach up to the confluence with the Elz, the Elzbach up to the Hochkelberg , from the Hochkelberg to the Nürburg over the Hohe Acht along the Achterbach to the Nitz through the woods, from there to Hirten to the source of the Karbach.

17th to 19th century

For this area, Nachtsheim remains the "mother church", even if other churches are founded in this area, the new churches receive the status of a subsidiary church. In the 12th century the parishes of Weiler and Wanderath were formed, with their own clergy, but still dependent on Nachtsheim. The replacement from Nachtsheim took place slowly and gradually. The heirs of the county of Virneburg , the Protestant Counts of Wertheim , wanted to introduce the Reformation in Weiler and Wanderath in the 16th and 17th centuries and considered both parishes to be independent. The Archbishop of Trier wanted to prevent this and strengthened the superiority of Nachtsheim, which at that time belonged to the Catholic Kurtrier Oberamt Mayen.

It was not until the statutes of the large rural chapter (dean's office) Ochtendung in 1655 that Welcherath, Weiler and Wanderath named independent parishes. In Welcherath, the pastor von Nachtsheim retained the right of presentation until 1800; that is, he appointed the pastor, whom the bishop appointed in Welcherath. Around 1800 France annexed the Left Bank of the Rhine and rearranged the diocese borders. Nachtsheim came to the newly created diocese of Aachen , with this reorganization Boos also became independent.

In 1824, Nachtsheim joined the new diocese of Trier , and since then it has belonged to the Mayen deanery. An indication of the very early settlement and foundation of Nachtsheim is the suffix -heim in the place name. The St. Stephen patronage of the parish of Nachtsheim indicates that the church was founded very early.

In between, a bell was cast in 1873, for which Kaiser Wilhelm I provided three hundredweight of gun bronze. In that year the organ of St. Clemens Church in Mayen was purchased for 800 thalers .

St. Stephen Church

In 1909 and 1910 the church was renovated. In 1927 three new bells were made. On August 10, 1942, Nachtsheim had to give up two bells due to war reasons. The Marian column was consecrated on the church square in 1944. In 1949 the church received two new bells, and another was added in 1960. Relics of St. Stephen were acquired in Rome and transferred to Nachtsheim on August 11, 1957.

Today's Catholic parish church St. Stephanus was consecrated on June 13, 1971 by Carl Schmitt. In it is still the baptismal font from 1557 with the Virneburg coat of arms. For an unknown reason, however, there are three diamonds at the top and four diamonds at the bottom, which is the opposite of the official Virneburg coat of arms.

The branch churches include St. Agidius in Anschau , St. Apollonia in Ditscheid and St. Hubertus in Münk . Alois Dreser has been the pastor since 2011.

coat of arms

Nachtsheim coat of arms
Blazon : "Split by a curled overturned golden tip, inside 7 red diamonds (4: 3), right in red a golden palm branch, left in green three golden ears."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The red diamonds come from the coat of arms of the Counts of Virneburg . These fought alongside Emperor Otto I (936–973) against the Hungarians . They chose the seven diamonds that looked like the shields of the defeated Hungarians. The black palm in the red field indicates St. Stephen , he has been the patron saint and patron saint of the parish for centuries. The golden ears of wheat in the green field stand for agriculture, which is still carried out by commercial enterprises to this day.
