history

Welcherath was first mentioned under the name "Uuerikenroth" in a possibly forged document from the Archbishop of Trier Ruotbert from the year 943. At the request of a certain Ratherus consecrated the archbishop, the Church Welcherath and imputed it as a branch of the Church to Nachtsheim . The church at Welcherath became an independent parish church before 1660.

In a list of the properties of the Laach Abbey from 1139, two farms are mentioned in Welcherath ( Werchenrede ) .

A school is already mentioned during a visit in 1785.

Until the end of the 18th century, Welcherath belonged to the archbishopric of Cologne ( Nürburg ), but the church belonged to the Archdiocese of Trier .

In the so-called French period , Welcherath belonged to the canton of Adenau in the Rhine-Moselle department from 1798 to 1814 . After the Congress of Vienna , the region was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815. Under the Prussian administration, Welcherath was assigned to the Kelberg mayor in the newly formed district of Adenau in the administrative district of Koblenz , which belonged to the Rhine province from 1822 on .

Welcherath always remained administratively with Kelberg . The mayor's office in Kelberg was renamed “Amt Kelberg” in 1927, like all the mayor's offices in the Rhine Province. After the dissolution of the Adenau district in 1932, Welcherath and the Kelberg district became part of the Mayen district , which remained until 1970.

In the course of the municipal reorganization of Rhineland-Palatinate and the reorganization of the association municipality Kelberg, the municipality Welcherath came on November 7, 1970 from the district Mayen, which was dissolved at the same time, to the district Daun (today district Vulkaneifel).
