Katzwinkel is a municipality in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the association community Kelberg .
geography
The community is located in the Vulkaneifel Nature Park . Neighboring communities are Kelberg , Ueß , Hörschhausen , Gefell , Sarmersbach and Beinhausen .
history
Stone Age excavations prove a prehistoric settlement of the area around Katzwinkel. A first documentary mention from 1143 shows that the Springiersbach monastery owned land in Katzwinkel.
Katzwinkel belonged to the county of Nürburg and later to the office of Nürburg and thus to the electorate of Cologne .
After the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops (1794) and the French administrative system was set up (1798), Katzwinkel was assigned to the Mairie Sarmersbach in the canton of Daun in the Saar department . Due to the decisions on the Congress of Vienna in the region in 1815 came to the Kingdom of Prussia and was from 1816 to the newly built district down in Trier , who later became the Rhine province belonged. Administratively, the municipality of Katzwinkel belonged to the mayor's office of Sarmersbach (renamed “Amt Sarmersbach” in 1927). The office of Sarmersbach was dissolved in 1931, Katzwinkel came to the office of Daun, from which the Verbandsgemeinde Daun emerged in 1968 . For November 7, 1970 Katzwinkel, together with Beinhausen , Boxberg , bridge , Hörschhausen and Neichen in the municipality Kelberg incorporated.

Worth seeing
The following sights should be mentioned in Katzwinkel:
- the Afelskreuz with a chapel. The name suggests an indulgence cross , but a proximity to Eifelkreuz is also possible. The current 3 m high wooden cross was erected on the site of a decayed one in 1931. The carved year 1231 indicates pilgrimages at that time.
- the Teufelsstein , 2 m in diameter, on the municipal boundary between Ueß and Katzwinkel, is a listed natural monument made of solidified lava.

In 2005, Katzwinkel won the Honorary Prize of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate for outstanding municipal projects. The local initiative took 7th place out of 97 submitted projects. In 2012 Katzwinkel took part in the competition “ Our village has a future ”. Katzwinkel has reached the 2nd place in the district decision.
