About this picture
Gillenfeld, parish church of St. Andreas with a medieval bell tower

Gillenfeld (in Eifel dialect: "Jillwed") is a municipality in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . She belongs to the community of Daun . Gillenfeld is a state-approved resort and designated as a basic center according to state planning .

Geographical location

The place is in the Vulkaneifel with a volcanic lake, the powder maar . The Maare-Mosel-Radweg leads through Gillenfeld on the route of the former railway line from Wittlich to Daun .

Gillenfeld also includes the Andreashof, Auf der Maarhöhe, Birkenhof, Erlenhof, Hof Römerberg, Johanneshof and Maarhof residential spaces.

history

The place Gillenfeld was mentioned for the first time in 1016, when Emperor Heinrich II had granted the Koblenz Florinsstift the market , coin and customs rights to Gilliveld .

The monastery of St. Florin in Koblenz had the manorial power of Gillenfeld . The Lords of Kerpen were enfeoffed with the Bailiwick of Gillenfeld . The bailiwick came by inheritance to the Counts of Manderscheid and finally to the Dukes of Aremberg. Aremberg had a mayor in Gillenfeld. The patronage of Gillenfeld belonged to the Archbishopric of Trier and the community therefore had to pay one guilder , six grazing sheep and ten Malter oats annually .

The state sovereignty claimed by Kurtrier and exercised by the Daun office was contested by the St. Florin monastery and the Duke of Aremberg. In the years 1722 and 1784 there were lawsuits at the Reich Chamber of Commerce, but they were no longer decided.

As a result of the French Revolutionary Wars , Gillenfeld suffered from the troop movements. From 1798 to 1814 the Gillenfelder were members of the French Republic and the French Empire (from 1804). Under the French administration, Gillenfeld belonged to the canton of Daun in the Saardepartement . Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), Gillenfeld was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia, as was the entire Eifel. Gillenfeld was the seat of a mayor's office in the Daun district, newly established in 1816, in the Trier administrative district .

Between 1836 and 1884 there was a great wave of emigration from Gillenfeld to America and Algeria , which was conquered by the French , with 126 people leaving their hometown. In 1876 and 1887 the place was then struck by two devastating fires.

Fire station in Gillenfeld

In 1876 the lower village and in 1887 the upper village fell victim to a conflagration. It is only thanks to the establishment of the volunteer fire brigade in 1880 that the fire in 1887 did not reach the proportions of 1876. Gillenfeld can also look back on a long tradition as a pastor. Already in 1220 the place appears as a parish. The places Ellscheid, Saxler and Winkel belong to today's parish of Gillenfeld. The parish church is St. Andrew's Church, built in 1898, which was built next to the old church, of which only the west tower has remained.

The events and the time of the Third Reich came to an end with the occupation by US troops on March 10, 1945 in Gillenfeld.

In 1968 the new secondary school was built and the village expanded due to the strong demand for building land. The 1970s then brought the administrative reform, which led to the dissolution of the Gillenfeld office and its integration into the Daun community. On March 22, 1988, the line closure Daun – Wittlich led to the closure of the Gillenfeld station.

coat of arms

Gillenfeld coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided by a wave cut; above in silver a red crown (imperial crown), below in blue a silver jug. "

The coat of arms was approved on November 28, 1990.

Justification of the coat of arms: The imperial crown symbolizes the market, coin and customs rights granted by the emperor in the 11th century; the wave cut and the blue base color of the lower part of the coat of arms indicate the Gillenfeld maars and thus also the volcanism; the jug is reminiscent of the manorial rule of the Koblenz Florinsstift , on various seal representations of the pin St. Florin was always depicted with a wine jug .

Attractions

Gillenfelder Maare

The Pulvermaar is not far from Gillenfeld and is the deepest natural lake in Germany after Lake Constance and the pre-Alpine lakes. In summer there is also a lot of bathing activity here. Together with the Holzmaar it forms the Gillenfelder Maare.

The dry maars - Dürres Maar and Hitsche Maar

West of the Alftal, three maars are lined up in a volcanic group : the Holzmaar, the Dürre Maar and the Hitsche Maar . They emerged one after the other along the geological fault line: First the Hitsche Maar in the northwest, then the Dürre Maar and finally the Holzmaar in the southeast. So volcanic activity migrated from northwest to southeast. The Hitsche Maar is the oldest maar and the Holzmaar the youngest within this maar group. These three maars were formed during the Glacial Vistula and are believed to be more than 20,000 years old.

The sequence of ages of the three maars can be derived from the sequence of overlaying the tuffs . The tuffs of the Hitsche Maar are covered by the tuffs of the Dürren Maar and the tuffs of the Dürren Maar are in turn covered by the tuffs of the Holzmaar, which were therefore last thrown out.
