Florinus von Remüs , von Matsch or von Vinschgau is a saint of the Catholic Church whose feast day is celebrated on November 17th, especially in the Diocese of Chur , in the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen , in the Archdiocese of Vaduz and in some places in the Rhineland .

Life

Little is known about his life. He is said to have been born in the 7th century near Matsch in Vinschgau and to have worked as a priest in Ramosch in the Lower Engadine . The church named after him there has been traceable since the 9th century . The sources call him confessor , which marks him as an exemplary witness of faith who was not a martyr . It was not until the turn of the first millennium that it was worshiped more widely and relics came to various places ( see : Florin's Church ).

Legends

The vernacular tells of Florin (us) that he once gave a woman the wine he was supposed to bring to his uncle Alexander, with whom he stayed for a long time, for the meal. She had asked him to strengthen her sick husband. But now there was nothing left for the uncle; so he took water at the well. The castle guard quickly told the uncle about the matter, and the uncle sat down at the table angrily. But he was ashamed to find that Florin did not bring water but wine. The uncle recognized the work of God in his nephew.

The saint is little known in the country he was probably born in, South Tyrol . According to statistics from 2001, around one in 4,000 male people there is named Florin.
