history

The first written mention of the place can be found in the documents of the Archbishop of Trier Ruotbert († 956). From the Middle Ages until the end of the 18th century, Retterath belonged to the county of Virneburg . In 1809 the place had its own district together with Arbach and Salcherath . Under Prussian administration, Retterath was a municipality in the Virneburg mayor's office in the Adenau district . After the Adenau district was dissolved in 1932, the community became part of Mayen district . In the course of the administrative reform in 1970, the municipality was assigned to the Daun district (now the Vulkaneifel district) and the Kelberg association, together with other communities from the former Virneburg office .

The council in Retterath consists of eight council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman.
