Scheid is a municipality in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Gerolstein community .
Geographical location
The Eifelort Scheid is located in the northwest of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The municipality borders on North Rhine-Westphalia . The border with Belgium is about 3 km from the town center. In addition to the main town, the districts of Birkenhof, Erlenhof, Lindenhof, Losheimerstraße, Schwalbenhof, Tannenhof and Wiesenhof belong to the municipality.
history
The place name is derived from watershed .
Scheid belonged to the Luxembourg dominion of Kronenburg until the end of the 18th century .
After the region was captured by French revolutionary troops (1794), Scheid belonged to the French canton of Kronenburg in the Ourthe department from 1795 to 1814 .
As a result of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna, the three municipalities of Hallschlag , Ormont and Scheid came from the Ourthe department to the Kingdom of Prussia . The three communities were assigned to the Hallschlag mayor's office in the Prüm district, newly established in 1816, in the Trier administrative district . At the beginning of the 20th century, a grenade factory was built near Scheid, which was destroyed by fire after the First World War . From 1938 a part of the west wall was built near the community of Scheid , which was supposed to shield the German western border as a defense system. During the Second World War , Scheid was located on the western front from September 1944 to March 1945 and was almost completely destroyed. After the end of the war, large parts of the Scheid community were closed due to the risk of mines .
As part of the Rhineland-Palatinate functional and territorial reform , the municipality of Scheid was reclassified together with 14 other municipalities on November 7, 1970 from the district of Prüm , which was dissolved at the same time, to the district of Daun (since 2007 district Vulkaneifel).

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver divided by a blue oblique left wavy bar, in front a green spruce with branches, behind a red oblique-left hip horn." | |
Justification for the coat of arms: The blue wavy bar that divides the coat of arms at an angle to the left represents the many streams that flow through the Scheid district. The spruce stands for the place name, which can be traced back to a Celtic meaning for forest or wood, but at the same time also points to the important forest management in the community. The horn symbolizes Saint Cornelius , the patron saint of the chapel and the community Scheid and at the same time the saint of the farmers and the cattle, which indicates the agricultural structure of the community. |
