history

Barrows and the remains of a Roman farm suggest that people settled in the area as early as the 2nd century AD. The first documentary mention, however, is only dated to the year 1389. The content of the certificate is a simple lease: Tilgin von Daun leases the farm in Husen near Uersfeld to the castle man and administrator Peter von Nürburg .

The reason for a mention in 1620 is a spectacular murder trial: Resident farmers are accused of having assassinated and robbed Spanish horsemen traveling through. The farmers were later hanged or wheeled. On the other hand, if you read the files and documents of that time carefully, it becomes clear that the farmers were only victims of a show trial: the killing of the Spaniards, which was probably justified at the time, was a political scandal in connection with the Thirty Years War and they were sentenced to death proverbial pawn sacrifices to secure the political intrigues and intrigues in the empire.

During the French Revolution , the Rhineland became the Franconian Republic and in 1794 a French corps (approx. 10,000 men) was encamped in the Kelberg area, and the surrounding communities had to provide for it. At that time Höchstberg had 69 inhabitants.

The French influence gave way with the Congress of Vienna in 1815 : the Rhineland became Prussian. In connection with the construction of the Eifelquerbahn from Mayen to Gerolstein and the mining of heavy spar , there was an economic boom at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1934 Höchstberg received its current name. The original name Hausen could have led to confusion with Hausen near Mayen .
