Drought maar

The Dürre Maar is located near the town of Gillenfeld in the West Eifel about 400 m northwest of the Holzmaar . The drought maar is a dry maar , the original maar lake has silted up. It is a poorly eroded wall of lapilli - Tuff surrounded having a diameter of about 290 m. The drought maar was formed more than 25,000 years ago.

In the Maarkessel there is a transitional moor made up of sphagnum and brown moss. The peat body is about 3000 to 4000 years old and has a thickness of about 12 m. Below the peat there are heavily decomposed lake deposits that originate from the late glacial period.

The bog is not only fed by rainfall, but also by springs located at its northeastern end.

The drought maar is under nature protection .
