Surname

The name of the maar, which is often abbreviated as Die Hitsche (also called Hetsche, Hättsche, or Hütsche) is said to be derived from the local dialect for toad .

Emergence

The Hitsche Maar is a dry maar and is located west of the Alftal in a volcanic group next to the Holzmaar and the Dürren Maar . Like the other two, it was formed along the geological fault line as a result of volcanic activity from northwest to southeast during the Vistula glaciation and is therefore the oldest of these maars at over 20,000 years. The tuffs of the Hitschen Maar were covered by the tuffs of the Dürren Maar.
