Location of the local community of Kaltenengers in the Mayen-Koblenz district
Kaltenengers is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . Kaltenengers is located north of Koblenz on the Rhine and, with a little more than 2,000 inhabitants and an area of 3.07 km², is the smallest town in the Weissenthurm community . With the neighboring towns of St. Sebastian and Urmitz , Kaltenengers is one of the so-called Rhine villages.
Geographical location
Kaltenengers is located opposite Engers on the left of the Rhine between Koblenz and Andernach at the level of river kilometers 600 and 601. The relatively low location between the Rhine and an old arm of the Rhine repeatedly leads to heavy flooding during high water, with the place being almost completely surrounded by water at times is.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1302 as Klein-Engers and in 1438 under the name Callen-Engers , but is probably much older. The name suggests that the place, like the neighboring municipality of Sankt Sebastian, was part of the Engersgau possessions on the left bank of the Rhine , which was last mentioned in a document in the 8th century. From 1545 to the French occupation in 1794, Kaltenengers belonged to the Trier Ministry of Mountain Maintenance . After a short affiliation to the French department de Rhin-et-Moselle , the place fell to Prussia in 1815 , which incorporated it into the Rhine province in 1822 . Since 1946, Kaltenengers has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Blazon : "Above a white anchor on a red background, below a red cross on a white background."

Church and educational institutions
As in all former Kurtrier places in the area, the population in Kaltenengers is predominantly Catholic - about 70 percent compared to 16 percent Protestants . In 1869 the place was raised to a parish. The Catholic parish church of St. Sylvester was built in 1870/71 and expanded and modernized in the 1950s. Today the Catholic community forms a parish association with the neighboring communities Urmitz and Sankt Sebastian .
The local community also has its own kindergarten and a four-class elementary school.
Pumice Museum
On April 16, 2014, the German Pumice Museum was opened in Kaltenengers . At 29 stations it illustrates the history and technology of pumice stone production from its beginnings around the middle of the 19th century to the present day. Until recently, the production of the so-called Rhenish alluvial stone was one of the main sources of income in the Neuwied Basin and has contributed significantly to its change from an agricultural land to an industrial region. The museum was set up by volunteers on the outskirts of Kaltenengers on the site of a former pumice factory and is part of the Eifel regional volcanic park . The organization “Cultural Heritage of the Pumice Industry” is the sponsor and initiator.
traffic
There is a connection to the B 9 via Landesstrasse 126 and Kreisstrasse 65 . A bus and, since 2006, again over the breakpoint Urmitz Rheinbrücke of Deutsche Bahn near the same Urmitzer Rhine Bridge , the place is in transport to the neighboring cities of Koblenz and Neuwied connected. A footbridge for pedestrians and bicycles by the bridge connects the town with the Neuwieder district of Engers on the right bank of the Rhine . A previously existing passenger ferry between Kaltenengers and Engers ceased operations in 1974.
