Sankt Sebastian is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Weißenthurm .

Geographical location

The place is located directly on the western bank of the Rhine and borders directly on the city of Koblenz in the south . Sankt Sebastian is therefore located very centrally in the Neuwied Basin , a spacious valley between the Eifel and the Westerwald created by the Rhine .

A large part of the area is a drinking water protection area. Therefore there is no local industry, only smaller craft businesses and retailers. The community has benefited from suburbanization , but has now, like many other communities, recorded a slight population decline.

Together with the adjacent Kaltenengers and Urmitz the three towns together the Rhine villages - municipalities mentioned.

history

The name of the place goes back to St. Sebastian , a Christian martyr from the 3rd century who is the patron saint of the Catholic parish church in St. Sebastian.

The historian Franz-Josef Heyen dates the first written mention of the place to the year 1150. In the founding history of the Rommersdorf Abbey , it is reported that Abbot Heinrich wrote the curtis Engersche trans Rhenum cum ecclesia quae ad ipsam pertinet (the Engers estate on the other side of the Rhine with church that belongs to this). This purchase was certified in a list of Pope Viktor IV on September 11, 1162 in connection with a dispute over property .

In the following centuries a multiple change of ownership can be proven. In 1329 Ritter Waldpode von Andernach bought the place under the name Ober-Engersch . In 1371 the place goes back to the Kurstaat Trier . In 1419, Elector Otto von Ziegenhain moved the Virneburg fief, including mountain maintenance , including Saint Sebastian, under electoral administration. In 1445, St. Sebastian finally came under the direct sovereignty of the Elector of Trier. St. Sebastian-Engers is recorded as the name of the place .

Since 1410 St. Sebastian had its own village court . After the end of the Thirty Years War , classes were given in the parish hall from 1657. In 1660 a regular ferry service between St. Sebastian and Bendorf was started.

In 1675 the rectory of St. Sebastian was destroyed in a fire. It was not rebuilt until 1680, and the name of the place is now Sanct Sebastian .

In 1699 the plague raged in nearby Eich (today a district of Andernach ). Faithful Eicher pilgrims to St. Sebastian to ask for mercy. These so-called Eicher processions still exist today as a tradition .

In 1780 the first school house was built next to the rectory. The village's primary school still stands on the same site today .

After being captured by the French in 1794, France annexed St. Sebastian along with the areas on the left bank of Kurtrier in 1797. Along with the secularization of the ecclesiastical principalities, the Rommersdorf Abbey is dissolved. From 1804, under the pressure of the occupation, the children had to learn French in school. In 1813 the wars of liberation against Napoleon's rule begin . On January 1st, 1814, the Prussian Field Marshal Blücher and his Silesian army advanced across the Middle Rhine against the French and forced the French to retreat. As a result of the reorganization of Europe through the Congress of Vienna , the Prussians received, among other things, essential parts of Kurtrier and thus established their supremacy on the Rhine. St. Sebastian comes under Prussian administration and forms the mayor's office in the Koblenz district . In 1822 the Rhine Province was formed with its seat in Koblenz .

In the course of industrialization, St. Sebastian also got a connection to modern achievements: the first motor ferry has been running between St. Sebastian and Bendorf since 1913 and there has been electric light in the village since 1918. In 1927 there is the first tap water in St. Sebastian. The quality of the groundwater is so high that large parts of the municipal area are still drinking water protection areas today.

The club life in the village was meanwhile in constant development. The shooting association was founded as early as 1863 and joined the Rhenish shooting association . The foundation of the men's choir MGV 1882 St. Sebastian is dated 1882; the Kirmesgesellschaft St. Sebastian was founded in 1904. In 1919 a football club was founded, in 1920 a gymnastics club, which in 1932 merged to form the St. Sebastian gymnastics and sports club . The voluntary fire brigade was established in 1927. In 1953, the St. Sebastian Music Association and the Catholic Women's Community were founded independently of each other . All of these associations are still active today and are an integral part of village life. Since 1971 there has also been a partnership with the municipality of Breitenbach am Inn in Austria .

The ferry service between St. Sebastian and Bendorf is stopped in 1962. In the following years the townscape underwent many changes, e.g. For example: in 1970 the Catholic kindergarten moves into its new building, in 1976 the elementary school is converted into a primary school, which is renovated and expanded in 1992. The fountain square on Mülheimer Weg has been enriching village life since 1988, and the second fountain square with a facility on the Bendorfer Bridge has followed since 1996 . From 1997 the new sports and multi-purpose hall functions as the central location for the local cultural events. After the development of a number of new building areas, newer single and multi-family houses now determine the character of the formerly agricultural town, while in the center near the village church only a few courtyards and half-timbered houses can be seen.

In 2000 the local parish of St. Sebastian celebrated its 850th anniversary.

Coat of arms and flag

With the approval of August 16, 1935, Sankt Sebastian was granted the right to use a municipal coat of arms in accordance with the German municipal code of that time . The blazon of the coat of arms at that time was described as follows:

Coat of arms of Saint Sebastian
Blazon : “The coat of arms is one of the triangular coats of arms. It is split from silver (white) with a continuous, red, Latin bar cross and from black with two diagonally crossed arrows in silver (white), which are equipped with barbs and feathering. The bars of the cross cross in the middle of the longitudinal bar. The intersection of the arrows is at the level of the horizontal center line of the crossbar. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The red cross stands for the Electorate of Trier , to which Saint Sebastian belonged as a sovereign until the end of the 18th century. The arrows show the bond with Saint Sebastian , who is the namesake of the place and patron saint of the Catholic parish church.

Since May 1st, 1989, St. Sebastian has also had its own flag. This consists of a rectangular cloth, which is divided lengthways into a red and a white half. The municipal coat of arms is located in the center of it in such a way that the white background with the cross is entirely on the red and the black background with the arrows is entirely on the white side.
