Luxem is a municipality about 10 kilometers west of Mayen in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Vordereifel , which has its administrative headquarters in Mayen. In the Middle Ages the place was called Luxheim . What is now the larger neighboring community of Weiler (near Mayen) emerged from an emigrant farm . In the Middle Ages the neighboring village was the hamlet of Niederluxem.

history

Luxem was first mentioned in 1320. Finds from Roman times suggest a settlement in antiquity. Henno von Bürresheim, known as von Daun, transferred a court in the place known as Lucxheim to Elector Baldwin of Trier as a castle fief .

The place name Lucsheim possibly comes from Latin and means light . Other sources report a deed of division from 1229 and a deed from 1336 in which Count Ruprecht zu Virneburg appropriated the neighboring properties, including Luxem. In that year Count Robert sold Virneburg Castle to Elector Baldwin for 2,200 Florentine guilders.

Church history

The first chapel was built in 1686. Inside there is a Madonna with child from the early 19th century and baroque wooden figures of John the Baptist and Saint Roch. A small organ was installed as early as 1883, thanks not least to the Nachtsheim pastor Conrady. At that time the organ cost the proud price of 495 marks. The old chapel was so dilapidated that one side wall collapsed on the night of March 24, 1966, and then other parts over the next few days. Rumor has it that an "assisted collapse" of the chapel favored its new construction and the expansion of the main road through the town (source: Johann Gäb, former mayor). Fortunately, the precious baroque altar had already been dismantled and brought to safety. The altar was re-erected in the newly built chapel, and the windows and doors as well as parts of the pews from the old chapel were used. The chapel has always been dedicated to St. Rochus of Montpellier . In terms of church organization, it is a branch church of the Weiler parish in the Nachtsheim pastoral care unit .

School history

After the first school was built in the village in 1840, the community founded its own school association in 1842. In 1885, the then teacher Peter Stein had taken the trouble to compile a small village chronicle. His salary was 60 thalers or 181 marks a year. The first teacher in Luxem was his father Jakob Stein, who came from a mill near Urmersbach . The last teacher, Sebastian Weiler, was transferred from Luxem to Kottenheim in the 1960s . This means that the previous school districts of Hirten , Luxem and Weiler have been merged into the Weiler primary school. The old school building and the adjoining "school yard" have since served as a meeting place for young people and a meeting place or place for various events such as a fair (campground), May celebrations or z. B. Public viewing location for the 2010 World Cup .

History of the water supply

In 1860 a temporary water pipe was laid, which was fed with water from the wells in the basements. The actual aqueduct was laid by opening up a spring in Frauenborn in 1895/96. At the same time, the community set up a fire fighting pond near the school. In the syringe house, in which light-shy rabble was sometimes locked, there was a fire engine to fight the fire.

emigration

As in other Eifel communities, numerous residents emigrated to America and Canada for economic reasons from the middle of the 19th century.
