Ochtendung is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Maifeld Association , which has its administrative headquarters in the city of Polch .

geography

Ochtendung is located in a former volcanic area. The nearby extinct volcanoes Mount Carmel and Tönchesberg and northerly point group are evidence of volcanic activity in different periods.

Ochtendung is close to the A 48 and A 61 and each has its own motorway exit. The place is located above the Nettetal . Neighboring communities are Lonnig , Bassenheim , Plaidt , Kruft and Saffig . Until a few years ago the B 258 began in Koblenz and led via Ochtendung to Mayen and then on to Belgium past the Nürburgring. The part between Koblenz and Mayen was graduated because of its proximity to Autobahn 48; since then this has been the L 98 .

The rails of the former Koblenz-Lützel-Mayen Ost railway line , which was shut down for passenger traffic in December 1983, are still [out of date] up to Ochtendung . Today a railway cycle path runs along the route from Ochtendung .

Community structure

The districts Alsingerhof, Emmingerhof, Sackenheimerhöfe (former district of Bassenheim ), Fressenhof and Waldorferhof belong to Ochtendung .

history

The name of the place Ochtendung is derived from the word Thing , Ding, (Ochten dung from "of demo dinge"). In earlier times a thing was the term for a court , or more precisely: for the place where the court was held.

Emperor Charles IV granted Ochtendung Frankfurt city rights on January 8, 1354 . In 1563 the village included 75 under the name Ochtendunk , and in 1683 64 fire places . It belonged to the Electorate of Trier until the end of the 18th century and initially formed its own administrative district with its seat at Wernerseck Castle , but later came under the administration of the Münster-Maienfeld Office .

archeology

The southeast Eifel is a "treasure trove" for archaeologists. In 1997, Axel von Berg found a Neanderthal dome with 3 stone artifacts (a broad scraper, a discoid core and a small cut) 3 km north of Ochtendung, in the area of the "Wanneköpfe" volcano. The dome is the roof of the skull of an adult man (30–45 years old) that had broken into three parts under the pressure of the earth, but which could be joined together again seamlessly. Their age could be dated geologically and with the leucine analysis to 160,000–170,000 years; so it comes from a so-called "early Neanderthal". The calotte is particularly interesting because of its morphological proximity to homo erectus and because it shows traces of human processing on the edges. Presumably it was "reworked" and used as a tool or bowl. The dome was covered by sediment very quickly and is therefore in a very good state of preservation.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Ochtendung
Blazon : "In silver a continuous red bar cross , angled by four black rings (circles)."
Justification of the coat of arms: The red cross in silver is the coat of arms of Kurtrier , to which Ochtendung belonged for over seven hundred years, the circles (rings) symbolize the old court in the Maifeld, called "Ding" or "Thing" at the time. The place name Ochtendung is derived from this term - the place was mentioned in the first documentary mention on June 10, 963, “of demo dinge”. It was an act of donation by the Franconian count Udo and his two vice counts Raginbold and Bernhard in favor of the Münstermaifeld monastery.
