Description of the flag: “Hoisting flag gold-red-gold in the ratio 1/6: 4/6: 1/6 horizontally striped. In the middle on the red stripe the coat of arms of the local community Virneburg. "

According to legend, the origin of the lozenges is explained as follows: The Hungarians penetrated as far as Kaisersesch in 933. Here they were defeated by a German army. Count Albick von Virneburg stood out in particular. As a thank you, the emperor awarded him the coat of arms with the 7 diamonds, which symbolized the long shields of the defeated Hungarians.

The coats of arms can still be found in many places today, including in the churches in Wanderath, Weiler, Nachtsheim, Mayen, Monreal, Schleiden , in the chapel in Einig and in Cologne Cathedral . Until 1615 the coat of arms only contained the 7 red diamonds on gold. Then the county came to Löwenstein-Wertheim and the lion was also included in the coat of arms.
