Bermel is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Vordereifel , which has its administrative headquarters in Mayen .

geography

The community is located in the Eastern Eifel . In the north, the Elzbach forms the municipal boundary . In addition to the eponymous place, there is the district of Fensterseifen and the Bermelermühle, Buchenhöfe and Heunenhof residential areas . The district of Güttgeshof has grown together with the village for decades.

history

In Roman times there was an estate in the area of ​​today's Bermel. The remains of a Roman bathing complex have been preserved. In the Elz valley below Bermel, the foundation walls of the Roman settlement are currently being excavated. In 1903 a statue of the seated goddess Fortuna with dedicatory inscription of M (arcus) Firmius Speratus and fragments of a Venus statue were found, which are now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn .

Bermel belonged to the late 18th century to kurtrierischen Office Monreal and the high court Masburg . The high court Masburg was a fiefdom of the Counts of Virneburg . The Trier fire book from 1563 lists 13 fireplaces (households) in Bermel.

Nature reserve

The former basalt quarry on Hochbermel (570 m) has been closed since the late 1970s and is now under nature protection. In recent years a rare biotope has formed in the quarry and on the heaps, many different amphibians have their home here and in the adjacent high beech forest.
