Kettig is a municipality in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Weißenthurm .
Geographical location
Located on the edge of the Neuwied Basin with a favorable climate , the agricultural areas of the municipality are increasingly characterized by special crops (especially the naturally cultivated elderberry).
history
Kettig is mentioned for the first time in a written source as Ketichi in Gau Maifeld in a document from the Echternach monastery from the second quarter of the 10th century. Other forms of name after 1200 were Ketge , Ketghe , Ketige and Kettich . From the 13th to the 16th centuries, St. Thomas Abbey owned land and interest-bearing goods in Kettig.
Kettig was hit hard by the Thirty Years War . Of 128 houses that have been handed down from 1563, only 85 were left in 1648. The castle, which Elector Werner III. von Falkenstein had built between 1409 and 1419 and was destroyed. The Second World War hit Kettig just as hard : in a bomb attack on December 29, 1944, 25 residential buildings, 15 agricultural buildings, 1 industrial plant, school and church were destroyed or seriously damaged. The war ended for Kettig on March 8, 1945, when the site was taken by American units of Combat Command B (CCB) of the 4th Armored Division .

Justification of the coat of arms: The red cross reminds of Kurtrier , whose office of mountain maintenance Kettig belonged. The eagle is taken from the coat of arms of the Knights von Kettig, who owned a castle house in the village and whose line died out in the 17th century. They carried a white eagle with blue stands as a coat of arms in a red shield. |
