Johann Jakob Kraft (born March 18, 1808 on the Fressenhof near Ochtendung , † June 9, 1884 in Trier ) was a German pastoral theologian and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Trier .

Life

Johann Jakob Kraft was the son of a farmer and grew up on the Fressenhof, a current district of Ochtendung, under simple circumstances. He received his first school lessons from the local pastor . This was followed by further education from 1820 to 1824 at the Progymnasium , today's Kurfürst-Salentin-Gymnasium , in Andernach and continued at the Gymnasium in Trier until 1827 . From autumn 1827 he completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the Episcopal Seminary in Trier . Kraft was ordained a priest on April 7, 1832 and worked as a chaplain , at times he was also the parish administrator in Ochtendung and represented his uncle, who was in office as pastor. The Potentinus Chapel on the Fressenhof near Ochtendung (Mayen-Koblenz district) was built by the Kraft family in 1851/1852 and is now a popular marriage church. Also in 1852 Johann Jakob Kraft became chaplain in Buchholz (Eifel) , after which he was appointed pastor of Miesenheim in 1835 .

Professor and Regens

The Trier bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi appointed Johann Jakob Kraft on March 3, 1844 to professor for pastoral theology at the Episcopal Seminary in Trier. Here he took over the office of subregens from 1846 , at the same time he received his doctorate on December 24, 1847 with the text De pronao , a summarizing historical-theological description of the general prayers (Oratio fidelium) , at the Catholic Faculty of the University of Freiburg im Breisgau as a doctor of the Theology. On September 2, 1861, he was appointed cathedral capitular and cathedral preacher and in 1864 stood up for election as a candidate for bishop for Trier. Finally, Leopold Pelldram was elected , after whom the first elected and later Bishop of Speyer , Abbot Daniel Bonifaz von Haneberg OSB, had not accepted the election. The next following bishop of Trier was Matthias Eberhard , who appointed the chapter force on November 16, 1867 to the clergy . From Pope Pius IX. in 1867 he was appointed papal house prelate .

Auxiliary bishop

On September 24, 1868, Kraft was appointed titular bishop of Castoria and auxiliary bishop in Trier. On August 26, 1882, he became cathedral dean at Trier Cathedral. The episcopal ordination celebrated Matthias Eberhard on 22 November 1868. The Golden Jubilee of Ordination in 1882 was the appointment of Roman Count (Comes Romanus) and the Pontifical throne wizard by Pope Leo XIII. honored.

Auxiliary Bishop Kraft was considered an excellent preacher and headed the bishopric in Trier during the vacancy from 1876 to 1881 caused by the Kulturkampf . During his tenure he consecrated several churches and altars . The Lebach parish church was completely demolished in 1881 and rebuilt by 1883. On October 1st, 1883, the church and altar were consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Johann Jakob Kraft. The Burbach Church of St. Eligius was built in 1873 by the architect Franz Müller, Saarlouis . It was consecrated on October 28, 1874 by Auxiliary Bishop Johann Jakob Kraft. Today's parish Saint Christophorus in Mittelreidenbach was also built by the architect Müller from Saarlouis in 1869/72. Auxiliary Bishop Johann Jakob Kraft undertook the consecration of the parish church on June 18, 1874. Even in these turbulent times and all the work, he expanded his writing activities. He wrote several homiletic contributions, and his dissertation was widely recognized. He wrote the biographies of the Trier bishops Wilhelm Arnoldi and Matthias Eberhard.

He was buried on June 13, 1884 in the auxiliary bishop's chapel on the cloister of Trier Cathedral , his successor was Heinrich Feiten .
