Life

Nicolaus Schienen was a son of the Zeller Stadtschultheißen Jacob Rail, who was originally called Jacob Haik von Kröv and had taken the name of his wife Engelen rails. It is believed that Schienen received his first education in the Latin school of the Minorites in neighboring Merl. After his schooling rails began in 1508 in Erfurt , a study , which he with a bachelor graduated. This was followed by further studies from 1510 to 1512 in Heidelberg with a degree in Magister Artium , and in Bologna from 1515 to 1516 with a doctorate in Dr. jur. utr . In 1514 he took up his first position as pastor in the Eifel community of Steinborn, which is part of the diocese of Cologne . In 1519 he first became secret secretary of Archbishop Richard von Greiffenklau of Trier before he was appointed auxiliary bishop and vicar general of Trier and titular bishop of Azotus on October 26, 1519 .

During his tenure he stood as a suffragan the Archbishop Richard von Greiffenklau (1511-1531), Johann III. von Metzenhausen (1531–1540), Johann IV. Ludwig von Hagen (1540–1547), Johann V. von Isenburg (1547–1556) and Johann VI. von der Leyen (1556–1567) to the side and is thus the longest serving auxiliary bishop of Trier. In 1546 he took over the parish of Kröv and in 1548 he joined the diocesan synod , who was considered gifted and said to be eloquent, in order to express his objections to the Reformation in a speech . After his death in 1556 he was buried in the Trier Liebfrauenkirche . His tomb has not been preserved, but the Latin inscription has survived:

"Nicolausbahnen, ex oppido Cellis ad Mosellam, Episcopus Azotensis, quinque Archiepiscoporum Trevirensium Suffraganeus, vitâ per annos 66 pie et tranquille actâ, ad meliora, corpus hoc loco fessum reliquit, exspectans diaphragm mala gouta corporis Domini, quo unusque , relaturus est. Obiit anno salutis 1556 31 Augusti. "

( "Nicolaus Schienen, from the city of Zell an der Mosel, bishop of Azotus, suffragan bishop of five Archbishops of Trier, after 66 years of living a pious and peaceful life, left his exhausted body for better, awaiting the Lord's day, at which everyone has to give an account of his own good or bad that he has done in the body. He died in the year of salvation 1556 on August 31st. " )
