Matthias Eberhard (born November 1, 1815 in Trier ; † May 30, 1876 ibid) was Bishop of Trier from 1867 to 1876 .

Life

Matthias Eberhard was ordained deacon on January 12, 1839, and ordained a priest for the diocese of Trier on February 23 of the same year . In 1842 he was professor of dogmatic theology at the Trier seminary whose rain he was 1849-1862. From 1850 he was cathedral capitular and from 1852 to 1856 a member of the Catholic parliamentary group in the Prussian state parliament .

The Dominican Order, of which he was a member as a Terziar , allowed him on March 10, 1859, to admit Christian believers into the brotherhood Militiae Angelicae seu cinguli Sancti Thomae Aquinatis . In 1862 Matthias Eberhard was appointed by Pope Pius IX. appointed titular bishop of Caesarea Philippi and auxiliary bishop in Trier. The bishop of Trier, Wilhelm Arnoldi , donated him his episcopal ordination on August 3, 1862. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Munster , Johann Georg Müller , and Johann Anton Friedrich Baudri , auxiliary bishop in Cologne . After the death of Bishop Leopold Pelldram , Matthias Eberhard was his successor in 1867.

At the First Vatican Council he was an opponent of the dogma of infallibility , but after the decision he proclaimed it in his diocese without reservation. He is described as "theologically absolutely loyal to the Pope and ultra- montane-conservative" and is considered "one of the most important pulpit speakers of his century".

As part of the Kulturkampf , Matthias Eberhard was arrested on March 6, 1874 as the second Prussian bishop and then sentenced to a fine of 130,000 gold marks and nine months in prison. He died six months after his release from prison at the height of the Kulturkampf. At the time of his death, 250 priests had been tried and 230 parishes in his 731 diocese were vacant.
