The Electricity Schonau ( EWS ) are a power company based in Schoenau in the Black Forest . The company, which emerged from the anti-nuclear movement , operates the local power grid and sells green electricity throughout Germany , advocating a climate-friendly and nuclear-free energy supply.

history

Emergence

The Elektrizitätswerke Schönau (EWS) emerged from a citizens' initiative with the participation of Michael and Ursula Sladek , which after the Chernobyl reactor disaster of April 26, 1986 wanted to actively implement an ecological energy supply. Initially, energy-saving competitions and information events were organized on site and a Chernobyl children's aid set up. The members of the citizens' movement held energy-saving consultations, published energy-saving tips, announced energy-saving competitions, reactivated small hydropower plants and supported combined heat and power projects. The cabaret group of the energy initiative Wattkiller went on tour in the region. The Schönauer energy initiatives (parents for nuclear-free future, power purchase, development association environmentally friendly power generation and distribution, combined heat and power stations Schonau Schonau) were in the press under the name Power rebels known.

Takeover of the power grid

Since the power monopoly at the time, Krafttransmission works Rheinfelden (KWR, now Energiedienst Holding ), did not want to participate in the ecological ideas, the citizens decided to use the concession agreement of the city of Schönau in the Black Forest, which was about to expire , and to submit an offer to the municipal council themselves. When this refused, a referendum was requested (1991) to take over the electricity network, which the citizens' initiative was able to win over.

A 1996 filed by the other side citizens 'petition was dismissed by the support of many citizens' groups, professionals and celebrities. The purchase of the power grid was realized through the commitment of 750 private individuals and the nationwide donation campaign Ich bin ein Störfall .

Anti-nuclear campaign

In the course of the debate about phasing out nuclear power, the Schönau electricity works initiated the “Wreck off!” Campaign in July 2009, supported by numerous environmental associations and citizens' initiatives. In the “Schönauer Stromnacht” in July 2015, Georg Schramm praised the Sladek couple for their commitment.

Establishing a cooperative

The sole owner of Elektrizitätswerke Schönau until the end of 2009 was Netzkauf GbR with 650 shareholders from Schönau in the Black Forest and Germany, which was founded in 1991 to acquire the power grid in Schönau in the Black Forest. From July 1, 1997 this GbR was officially the operator of the electricity network and had 1700 customers. In the meantime, further companies have been founded in the form of a GmbH that function as subsidiaries.

At the end of November 2009 a cooperative called Netzkauf EWS eG was founded. The partnership shares of the GbR were transferred to cooperative shares. The number of cooperative members was 7,225 in December 2018.

On July 1, 2016, the General Assembly decided to rename Netzkauf EWS eG to EWS Elektrizitätswerke Schönau eG . The cooperative is the parent company of other companies and also has a 40% stake in the sales company of Stadtwerke Stuttgart, for example.

The annual general assemblies resolved the following profit distributions to the members of the cooperative:

Germany's highest wind farm went into operation in 2017 . The system on the Rohrenkopf ( 1170  m ) was built for 29 million euros and delivers around 32,000 MWh annually.

Network operation

The Elektrizitätswerke Schönau has been operating the local electrical network in the city of Schönau in the Black Forest since 1997. Due to regulatory requirements, network operation is now carried out in an independent company called Elektrizitätswerke Schönau Netze GmbH , which supplies the following locations (as of 2018):

Electricity distribution

At the time of the liberalization of the energy market in 1999, EWS began offering green electricity nationwide. Their customer base at that time consisted of 1,700 households in their own network area in Schönau.

The electricity from the Schönau electricity works initially came from new hydropower plants and cogeneration. New systems are those that are not more than six years old when they are supplied. Wind power and photovoltaic systems have an increasing share. In addition, the plants may not have any capital participation from nuclear power plant operators or their subsidiaries. This is checked and certified annually by TÜV Nord .

By January 2011, around 1,750 solar energy , combined heat and power, hydropower and biogas plants had been built through the Sonnencent subsidy program with a subsidy for ecological power generation systems included in the electricity tariff ; currently there are around 2,700, most of which are owned by private individuals.

Between the end of the year 2016 and early 2017, a total of five wind power plants of the type Enercon E-115, each with 115 m rotor diameter, 149 m hub height and 3 megawatt rated power in Gersbach (Schopfheim) put into operation. The systems were built on the elevation of the Rohrenkopf in the Black Forest biosphere area . Around 29 million euros were invested in the wind farm, which generates up to 45 million kWh annually and is supposed to cover the electricity needs of around 15,000 households.

EWS multiplied its customer base from just over 15,000 in August 2001 to over 200,000 at the end of February 2019.

Gas trading

EWS has also been offering gas supplies since 2010. Initially, the offer was only available to customers from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and since March 1, 2015 it has also been available nationwide. In December 2015 more than 11,000 customers were supplied.

Awards

From the Stiftung Warentest EWS Schönau was designated in February 2012 as an independent four green energy providers in Germany. In the Ökotest comparison of green electricity tariffs, EWS electricity took first place in May 2011.

Since 2001, the EWS, together with the “Schönau Energy Initiatives” and the city of Schönau, have awarded the “ Electricity Rebell of the Year ” prize to people who, in their own words, “implement visions and overcome resistance”.

Movie

In 2008 the film Das Schönau Feeling was released , produced by the Association for Environmentally Friendly Power Distribution and Energy Generation in Schönau im Schwarzwald eV (FuSS eV). The film deals with the history of the Schönauer Initiative and is also available on DVD.
