Karl Ernst Schrod (born March 13, 1841 in Bickendorf ( Bitburg district ), † April 10, 1914 in Trier ) was a pastoral theologian and liturgist , as well as a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Trier .

Life

Karl Ernst was the only son of Johann Baptist Schrod († 1844) and the scholastica Caecilia du Sartz de Vigneulles. His father died in his early childhood and his mother had to raise him alone. They lived with their great-uncle, he spent his childhood in Rammelfangen , Beaumarais ; Here he attended the Pro-Gymnasium, then switched to the Petrinum Gymnasium in Recklinghausen , where he graduated from high school in 1860 . From 1860 to 1864 he studied philosophy and theology in the Trier seminary and was ordained a priest on August 27, 1864 . Schrod found his final resting place on April 14, 1914 in the auxiliary bishop's chapel on the Trier cathedral cloister . He is an honorary citizen of his birthplace Bickendorf.

Church career

He took on his first position as chaplain from 1864 to 1867 in the St. Antonius parish in Trier, during which time he held the office of president of the journeyman's association in Trier . On December 24, 1867, Schrod was appointed vicar in Ensdorf (Saar) and took over the parish in Ensdorf in 1868, during which time the local rosary brotherhood was founded . The appointment to professor for pastoral theology at the seminary in Trier took place on October 22nd, 1872. The seminary in Trier was closed in 1873 with the Kulturkampf . Auxiliary bishop

Auxiliary Bishop Schrod was appointed Trier official in 1896 and in 1897 he took over the chairmanship of the administrative board of the Episcopal Konvikt , which was followed in 1898 by the appointment of cathedral dean . In 1904 he became President of the Diocesan Museum and in 1906 he became an honorary member of the Board of Directors. 93 church consecrations and 44 altar consecrations fell during his consecration as an auxiliary bishop , and he donated the sacrament of Confirmation to about 240,000 believers . He was co-consecrator at the episcopal ordinations of Archbishop Charles-Henri-Jean-Willibrord Benzler OSB , Bishop Heinrich Vieter SAC and Bishop Jules-Joseph Cénes OMI . After his death, Antonius Mönch followed him .

Liturgical works

Schrod wrote several prayer and devotional books during his creative period. He was involved in the redesign of the Trier diocesan chant from 1892. In addition, he had a large share in the edition of the "Trier Eigeneils des Missales und Breviers " (1887) approved by the Pope . After all, he was also instrumental in the "Trier Appendix to Roman Rituals " published in 1893 .
