Gerhard Heinrich Vieter SAC (born February 13, 1853 in Selm - Cappenberg , † November 7, 1914 in Yaounde , Cameroon ) was a Roman Catholic bishop and first vicar apostle of Cameroon.

Life

Heinrich Vieter in 1853 as the second of six children of a farming family in the peasantry (which later after the nearby Übbenhagen Schloss Cappenberg was named) was born in the southern Münsterland. After an apprenticeship and subsequent years of traveling as a journeyman carpenter, he joined the newly founded Pallottine Missionary Society in Masio ( Northern Italy) in 1883 . This was followed by studies of Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1884 to 1887. On May 8, 1887, Vieter received the sacrament of ordination in Rome . Then he was responsible for the management of the order's own seminar in Masio. But just two years later, William Withmee, the rector general of the Pallottines, sent Father Vieter on his first missionary assignment in 1888 with the task of looking after Italian emigrants in their new home country, Brazil .

On July 20, 1890, an Apostolic Prefecture was established in the German colony of Cameroon and Vieter was appointed the first Apostolic Prefect for Cameroon and transferred to Cameroon from Brazil. In October of the same year, Vieter and other missionaries of his order arrived in Duala , Cameroon.

After fourteen years of successful missionary work, the Apostolic Prefecture of Cameroon was elevated to the position of Apostolic Vicariate . Pope Pius X appointed Heinrich Vieter titular bishop of Paraetonium in 1904 and appointed him on December 24, 1904 as the first vicar apostle for Cameroon. He was ordained bishop on January 22, 1905 in Limburg Cathedral by Bishop Dominikus Willi OCist ; Co-consecrators were Maximilian Gereon Graf von Galen , auxiliary bishop in Münster , and Karl Ernst Schrod , auxiliary bishop in Trier . In September 1906 Vieter held the first synod of the Catholic Church in Cameroon in Duala .

In the last few years of his life, he was repeatedly weakened by physical exhaustion and tropical diseases. Heinrich Vieter died on November 7, 1914 in his bishop's house in Mvolyé near Yaounde , an estate that Karl Atangana had given to the Pallottines. He found his final resting place there with great sympathy from the population.

Beatification procedure

In connection with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Apostolic Vicariate of Cameroon and Heinrich Vieter's episcopal ordination, the current Archbishop of Yaounde initiated the official process for the beatification of Bishop Vieters at the beginning of 2005 .

Honors

A street is named after him in his home town of Cappenberg. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death on November 7, 2014, the Catholic rectory in Cappenberg was given the name Bischof-Vieter-Haus .
