The Archdiocese of Yaoundé or Yaunde ( Latin : Archidioecesis Yaundensis ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Yaoundé (Yaounde), Cameroon .
history
Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Prefecture of Cameroon on March 18, 1890 from the cession of territory of the Apostolic Prefecture of the two Guineas . On January 2, 1905, she became the Apostolic Vicariate . On June 12, 1923 this lost parts of its territory to the Apostolic Prefecture Buéa and on March 31, 1931 to the Apostolic Prefecture Douala . With the Breve Sub anulo Piscatoris on April 3, 1931, it took the name Apostolic Vicariate Yaoundé. On March 3, 1949, it lost part of its territory to the Vicariate Apostolic Doumé .
The elevation to the Metropolitan Archbishopric took place on September 14, 1955 with the Apostolic Constitution Dum tantis . On June 24, 1961, July 6, 1965 and July 3, 1987 it lost further parts of its territory to the Diocese of Mbalmayo , the Apostolic Prefecture of Bafia and the Diocese of Obala .
