history
Pope Pius IX founded the Apostolic Prefecture Cape of Good Hope, Central District on August 3, 1874 from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope, Western District . On July 20, 1885, it lost part of its territory to the Orange River Apostolic Prefecture . On April 9, 1934, the island of St. Helena with the Apostolic Constitution Quo spirituali was assigned to the Apostolic Vicariate Cape of Good Hope, Western District. On June 13, 1939, the Apostolic Prefecture Cape of Good Hope, Central District adopted the name Apostolic Prefecture Oudtshoorn.
Pius XII. elevated them to the Apostolic Vicariate on December 9, 1948 with the Apostolic Constitution Ad altiorem dignitatis . The elevation to the diocese took place on January 11, 1951 with the Apostolic Constitution Suprema Nobis .
