Oudtshoorn in the municipality of Oudtshoorn , Garden Route District , Western Cape Province in South Africa is the most important town of the Little Karoo . In 2011 Oudtshoorn had 61,507 inhabitants. The city, founded in 1847, lies between the Swart Mountains in the north and the Outeniqua Mountains in the south on the Gobbelaars River. The city is the center of the South African ostrich industry , which had its heyday in the early 20th century. A few “feather palaces” of the “ostrich barons” bear witness to this. Oudtshoorn is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oudtshoorn .
Sights include the former “Feather Palaces”, the CP Nel Museum in the city center and some ostrich farms outside the city. 29 kilometers away is the cave system of the Cango Caves and further on on the way to Prince Albert the unpaved Swartberg Pass through the Swartberge, which is up to 2,150 meters high.
