GNU Go is one of the Free Software Foundation published free software that Go can play. It is under the GNU General Public License .

The program supports different board sizes from 5 × 5 to 19 × 19 fields. The level of play is roughly equivalent to the 5th Kyū , so it remains significantly below the level that can be achieved with the best programs on reasonably fast hardware. However, this gap to the best programs only arose relatively recently (since around 2006) due to great progress in the development of programs with fundamentally different functionality than GnuGo. GNU Go does not have a graphical user interface , there is only a kind of ASCII-Art interface for the command line. In order to be able to use it as a computer game , a second program that acts as a client of the GNU Go server should be used. For communication with clients, GNU Go supports two protocols: the Go Modem Protocol and the Go Text Protocol. Both are based on ASCII .

history

The first stable version of GNU Go (version 1.1) was released in March 1989 . GNU Go is also available for Windows Mobile in version 2.6.5 ( 2007 ).

Applicability on other platforms

GNU Go can be operated on all UNIXoid operating systems (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and many more) and has also been ported to Apple's iPhone . Since Apple sells the program through its AppStore and forbids in the terms of use that GNU Go is passed on under the same conditions, the company violates the GPL from the perspective of the Free Software Foundation .
