John Coleman

Johannes Coleman ( Johannes Lodewyk Meyer "Johnny" Coleman ; born June 5, 1910 in Oudtshoorn , † January 13, 1997 in Johannesburg ) was a South African marathon runner .

In 1935 he was third in the Comrades Marathon over 87 km and won the Durban Athletic Club Marathon, which he also won in the following four years, in 2:38:32 h. The following year he was South African marathon champion with the national record of 2:31:58 h and was sixth at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in 2:36:17 h.

In 1937 he was South African runner-up and set a course record at the Comrades Marathon with 6:23:11 h, and in 1938 he won the British Empire Games in Sydney with his personal best of 2:30:50 h. In 1939 he was third in the South African Championships and improved his course record in the Comrades Marathon to 6:22:05 h, and in 1940 he was South African champion for the second time in 2:37:30 h.

In 1947 he won the Jackie Gibson Marathon. The following year he won his third national championship title with 2:32:30 h and was fourth in the 1948 Olympic Games in London in 2:36:06 h. At the end of his career he was South African runner-up in 1949.
