Hermann Skolaster SAC ( pseudonym : Uncle Hermann ; born August 3, 1877 in Seeburg , East Prussia , † August 4, 1968 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a German religious and writer .

Life

Hermann Skolaster came from a Catholic family. He attended grammar school in Braunsberg in East Prussia up to the lower secondary school , then the school of the Steyler missionaries in Steyl in the Netherlands and from 1897 the school of the Pallottines in Limburg an der Lahn . In 1898 he entered the Pallotine order; In 1904, following the studies of philosophy and Catholic theology customary in the order, he was ordained a priest . Skolaster taught for two years at the Pallottine College in Vallendar . In 1906 he was sent by his order as a missionary to the German colony of Cameroon . In Cameroon he worked in Kribi and Edéa and founded the Andreasberg mission station , where the Pallottines dedicated themselves in particular to the schooling of African children and young people. During the First World War, Skolaster worked as a chaplain in the German Schutztruppe ; after their defeat in the battle against the English , he returned to the religious house in Limburg in 1916. From 1917 to 1919 he was again a military chaplain , this time with the German Army in Russia .

After the end of the First World War, Hermann Skolaster initially worked in Germany, in the people's mission . In 1920 he was sent to East Prussia, where he founded the Rössel mission station , which he was in charge of until 1923. Afterwards he was active again as a pastor and retreat leader in Limburg . From 1926 to 1939 he taught as a professor of homiletics at the Pallottine College in Limburg. During the Second World War , Skolaster returned to East Prussia, where he saw the Red Army march into Rössel . From 1946 he lived in Limburg again.

In addition to his work as a priest, Hermann Skolaster was also active as a journalist . He published theological frameworks, edited the mission magazine Stern der Heiden from 1935 to 1939 and wrote articles for the children's supplement Der kleine Missionar in this magazine under the name "Uncle Hermann" . Skolaster also wrote novels and short stories of an entertaining character. His novel Sister Beata , which had a total print run of over 200,000 copies and was translated into several languages, and the series of detective novels about the monk detective Brother Justus , published since 1939, were particularly successful .
