Kloosterdorp Steyl

Maas ferry and St. Michael monastery church

The mother house of the Steyler Missionaries ( Societas Verbi Divini, SVD, Society of the Divine Word ) is located in Steyl . This Catholic religious order was founded in 1875 by Arnold Janssen .

In addition to the male missionary order of the Divine Word Missionaries, Arnold Janssen's foundings also include the Divine Word Missionary Sisters and the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. The latter have devoted themselves entirely to the contemplative life ( pink sisters , according to the color of their habit). These three monasteries of the Steyl religious family form the so-called Kloosterdorp Steyl .

Mission Museum

The Missionsmuseum Steyl has remained unchanged since 1931. Missionaries brought the objects from all over the world to Steyl and exhibited some of them to give information and insights into distant countries and cultures.

Double church

Mention should also be made of the two-story double church belonging to the monastery . The upper church is only accessible through the mission house: a light-filled room in which the original neo-Gothic interior has been almost completely preserved. It is often used for larger celebrations and events in the summer months. The lower church of the St. Michael Mission House , a contemplative place of silence, serves as a prayer room for the Steyler community. The artist Will Horsten from Kevelaer redesigned it in 1972 ; he added modern elements to the old church interior. The high grave of St. Arnold Janssen is also located here . In the upper church of the mission house there is a historical organ (Späth / Klais from 1888/1937). International organ concerts are played on the German-Romantic instrument in the summer months.

St. Michael Park

The grounds of the park of St. Michael date from the early days of the mission house. This includes several grottos that were created at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with the “Jochumhof”, the park is part of the Limburg Garden Route of the European Garden Heritage Network - EGHN.

Guest house

Today, the Steyler missionaries run a friendly designed guest house ( Centrum St. Michael ) in St. Michael with around 55 guest beds, multifunctional conference rooms for groups of 10 to 80 people, prayer and meditation rooms, common rooms and a large dining room. Further accommodations of various categories and three large halls (up to 150 people) are offered in the mission house.

Sequoiahof

There is a settlement called Sequoiahof near the Maas ferry and the monastery. Here is a large and impressive sequoia tree .

More Attractions

Other sights in Steyl near the St. Michael monastery are the botanical garden "Jochumhof", the "Schutterijmuseum" (museum of rifle clubs) Steyl and the "pottenbakkerij" (pottery). The gardens and the botanical garden form a unique ensemble with the three monasteries, whose special character led to the monastery village Steyl being granted the status of a state-protected monument in 2008.

The population of Steyl is characterized by a lively club life. The Steyler Carnival is also well known .
