Edéa is a place in Cameroon and is located in the province of Littoral about 60 km southeast of the provincial capital, Douala . It is the administrative seat of the Sanaga-Maritime department . Its 122,300 inhabitants (2001) live on both banks of the Sanaga, partly in urban surroundings, partly in suburbs characterized by agriculture.
history
The city is located in the traditional settlement area of the Bakoko (Basaa). The settlement originally did not have a central function within the segmentary Bakoko societies. It owes its current importance to the construction of a German government station in October 1891. The main reasons for choosing the location were traffic-related reasons: Edéa was the last point in the Cameroon inland that could be reached by ship via Kwakwa-Creek and Sanaga from Duala. The area belonging to the Edéa district was forcibly brought under German control until around 1904 . Despite the temporary stationing of the military and the leadership of officers of the German protection force , the place always remained formally under civilian administration.
After the First World War , Edéa and the larger, eastern part of Cameroon came under French mandate rule .

Edéa is characterized by a large aluminum smelter (ALUCAM), the Edéa power plant right next to it , which uses the Sanaga flow to generate electricity, especially for ALUCAM, as well as urban trade and agriculture.

Edéa is located on the main connections (rail, road) between the port and economic metropolis Douala and the state capital Yaoundé . An old bridge from the German colonial era and a more recent bridge construction lead over the Sanaga .

Edéa has been the seat of a Catholic bishop since March 22, 1993.
