Edwige Jeanne Gwend (born March 11, 1990 in Edéa , Cameroon ) is an Italian judoka . In 2010 she was runner-up in the European light middleweight division, in the weight class up to 63 kilograms.

Athletic career

The 1.63 m tall Edwige Gwend was third in the U20 European Championships in 2008, and in 2009 she won the title. At the European Championships 2010 she lost in the final to the Dutchwoman Elisabeth Willeboordse . The Italians won the team title. At the end of 2010 Gwend won the U23 European Championships. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , she lost her opening match against the Chinese Xu Lili .

In 2013 and 2014 Gwend took fifth place at the European Championships. She was also fifth at the 2014 World Championships . Also in the 2016 Olympic year, Gwend was fifth at the European Championships. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she defeated the Swede Mia Hermansson in her opening fight, and in her second fight she was defeated by the Slovenian Tina Trstenjak . In October 2017 Edwige Gwend won the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi. In the summer of 2018, she defeated the Tunisian Meriem Bjaoui in the final of the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona .
