Wittmannsgereuth is a district of the city of Saalfeld / Saale in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

The small town of Wittmannsgereuth is located southwest of Saalfeld / Saale . It is about 600 m. ü. NN and has 96 inhabitants.
history
Wittmannsgereuth was first mentioned in a document in 1337. In addition to agriculture, iron ore mining became the main industry from the 18th century . Traces of ore mining can still be seen on the Eisenberg today. For the Maxhütte Unterwellenborn , the Wittmannsgereuth mine was the most important raw material supplier until the 20th century.
From 1991 to 1996 the place belonged to the administrative community Saalfelder Höhe . With the conversion of this into the unified community of Saalfelder Höhe on January 1, 1997, Wittmannsgereuth also became a district of this unified community. This was incorporated into Saalfeld on July 6, 2018.
Leisure and nature
Leisure activities include a football field, a restaurant and the “Mellestollen” hotel.
The Wittmannsgereuth bat gallery is a retreat for the endangered bat species, the little horseshoe bat .
The Mellestollen visitor mine with an educational mining trail is located near the Waldhotel-Restaurant "Mellestollen". Viewing appointments are to be arranged through the hotel.
