Location of Gorndorf in Thuringia

Erasmus-Reinhold-Gymnasium in Gorndorf

Gorndorf is the largest district in the district town of Saalfeld in Thuringia .

geography

The district is located at the east end of the city of Saalfeld in a wide trough-like valley (Weiratal), which was mainly used for agriculture before the construction of an extensive new building area. Traditionally, all parts of the settlement east of the railway line are counted as "Gorndorf", although the narrower district is much smaller and the majority of the new development area is located on the "Saalfeld" district. The federal road 281 runs from Saalfeld to Gera to the north , and the Saalfeld – Gera – Leipzig line also runs through the valley. At the northwest end you can see the mountain Kulm . The Saale flows between Gorndorf and the city center from the slate mountains to Rudolstadt . The district has access to the core city (old town) via bridges.

history

The village was first mentioned on June 25, 1328. Gorndorf is located in Thuringia approx. 50 km southeast of the state capital Erfurt. Before the fall of the Wall, Gorndorf had around 10,000 inhabitants, and today it still has around 6,000 inhabitants. A distinction must be made between Altgorndorf, the original farming village on both sides of the Weira, and a very large new building area that emerged after the Second World War . The origins of the new building area go back to a strong demand for apartments for the workers of the Maxhütte in nearby Unterwellenborn . A first closed housing estate, which is now completely under monument protection, was built in the 1950s at the east end of today's Stauffenbergstrasse (monument ensemble residential complex Stauffenbergstrasse 7–47, 146–168). From the 1960s on, prefabricated housing estates began to emerge , some of which have since been dismantled.

A grammar school, a regular school, a primary school and a spiritual special school are available in Gorndorf. There is also a youth and district center with a small observatory.

On January 1, 1963, the previously independent community of Gorndorf was incorporated into the district town of Saalfeld.

1902 to 1905, when Gorndorf still had a rural character, one of the last grinding mills was built on the river Weira. Until then there was no mill in the village because of the mill compulsory .
