The medieval desert Brandiskirchen is located in the area .

On November 1, 1994, the community joined the then administrative community of Lichte-Piesau-Schmiedefeld. This was renamed on December 30, 2004 in Lichtetal am Rennsteig .

The district of Gösselsdorf was first mentioned in 1275 and temporarily belonged to Graefenthal. In 1974 it was incorporated into Reichmannsdorf.

The community of Reichmannsdorf was incorporated into the district town of Saalfeld / Saale on January 1, 2019.
