Piesau is a district of the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg in the Sonneberg district in Thuringia (Germany).

geography

Piesau is located in the heart of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the valley of the stream of the same name and is part of the Thuringian Forest Nature Park . The place stretches for about two kilometers in this valley and merges almost seamlessly into the municipality of Lichte in the north . The village is framed by the Mittelberg (804 m) in the west, the Hirschstein (755 m) in the east, the Rodeberg (761 m) and Hohem Schuß (825 m) in the south. Furthermore, the village is embedded in seven valleys, from each of which a spring feeds the village stream. The origin lies in the Kieselbach spring in the direction of Ernstthal , further sources flow from the Malersgeräum, Bornstiegel, Hans-Götzen-Grund, Hans-Stauchen-Grund, Bergmeistergeräum and the Bärenbach. Piesau is a supplier of drinking water, which is obtained in the Leibis-Lichte dam and supplies the regions of Eastern Thuringia. The mountain streams in the area are considered to be the gold-richest in Germany.

Piesau is surrounded by extensive spruce forests and is the only village in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district that borders the Rennsteig . The highest point in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district at 827 meters can also be found there. The former inner-German border and the old trade and military route from Nuremberg to Leipzig run south of Piesau .

history

Founding years and founder of the glassworks

In 1621, Duke Johann Philipp von Sachsen-Altenburg granted permission to build a glassworks with 12 stands in the forest area east of Lauscha and Schmalenbuche (Neuhaus am Rennweg). Glassworks have been in operation there since 1597 and 1607 respectively. Then in 1622 the master glassmakers Hans Heinz, Peter Bock, Hans Dietz and Georg Schott built a glassworks and the first houses. The first glass was melted on August 30, 1622 . The abundant water and wood for glass production were decisive for the location. The village of Piesau was only founded 5 years later, on June 14, 1627, when the letter of inheritance was presented.

Hans Heinz came to Piesau from Fehrenbach. The Heinz family subsequently expanded to include other glassworks in the area. The son of Hans Heinz z. B., also Hans by first name, founded a glassworks in Kleintettau (Franconia) a few kilometers away in 1661 , which is still owned by the family today.

Peter Bock comes from Schönau / Fichtelgebirge and came to Piesau via Lauscha and Schmalenbuche. After his death and the later sudden death of his son, the shares were transferred to his widow and, subsequently, to her second husband, Johann Müller from Schmalenbuche.

Georg Schott came to Piesau via Schleusingen and Schmalenbuche. The Schott family left the Piesau glassworks in 1705 by selling their shares to Heinz and Müller. In addition, they participated in the establishment of new glassworks in the region and were significantly involved in the creation of the Schott company in Jena.

Hans Dietz came from Seiffen / Erzgebirge and was also a master glassmaker in Schmalenbuche. The family name later changed to Kühnert through marriage.

Development of the place up to the division of the German Empire

As the first glass products, drinking glasses, goblets, stem glasses and table glass were made, which in terms of quality corresponded to the greenish Thuringian Forest glass. From 1684 onwards, the addition of potash enabled the production of finer glasses, e.g. B. Bottles and containers for pharmacies. Sales took place regionally, but also through so-called glass dealers (carters) to long-term destinations, e.g. B. via the nearby trade route Nuremberg – Leipzig and as far as Holland.

During the Thirty Years 'War and the Seven Years' War , Piesau was spared from the acts. The master glassmakers were exempted from military service through a privilege.

In the course of the 18th century, another settlement was built on Mittelberg in addition to the "old hut settlement", initially as a separate village.

In 1845 Carl Heinrich Florenz Müller was born, who went down in history as the pioneer and inventor of the first usable X-ray tube. His later work in Hamburg was preceded by learning the glassmaking trade in Piesau.

From 1868 there was also a porcelain factory in Piesau (Bernhard & Bauer), which provided work for up to 120 people. In addition to glass, porcelain production was the second important branch of industry in the entire surrounding region. Today the “Thuringian Porcelain Route” leads directly past Piesau.

A school was first built in 1893. Until then, the children were taught alternately in the individual houses.

In 1906 a second glassworks was built, the "Untere Hütte" (Müller & Co.) at the confluence of the Piesau and Bärenbach streams. This was now operated with coal firing. In 1909 this hut burned down; but it was soon possible to continue production. Since there were almost unsolvable problems with the wood procurement in 1910, the new "upper hut" was built elsewhere, which from then on also ran with coal. This traded under the "Glassworks Championship Müller & Kühnert, Piesau" founded in 1901.

The volunteer fire brigade has been providing fire protection and general help since 1923 . It emerged from the compulsory fire brigade that had been in use since 1916.

In the First and Second World Wars , many people from Piesau lost their lives or, in some cases, were considered missing for many years. The place itself was spared from the war, apart from a small incident during the invasion of the Americans in 1945. After the Second World War, around 450 displaced persons were quartered in Piesau.

Development in the GDR

On June 1, 1948, all company owners were expropriated and were no longer allowed to enter their factories. Under the new framework conditions of the GDR government, both glassworks were merged in 1949 under the name "VEB Hohlglaswerk Piesau". At that time there were around 1360 inhabitants in Piesau. A kindergarten was also set up for the first time in 1949.

The inauguration of the Laurentiuskirche took place in 1959, after the foundation stone had already been laid in 1954. Before there was no church, the place belonged to the parish of Schmiedefeld.

A new school was built in 1966/67.

After the reunification of Germany

In 1991 the schools were permanently closed. Since then, the children have been taught in Schmiedefeld (elementary school), Lichte (regular school) and Neuhaus am Rennweg (high school). Today the old school buildings are used by the municipal administration, including the Piesau traditional and bookstore, and as residential buildings.

The porcelain and glass production of the "Lower Hut" has also been suspended since 1991.

The "Obere Hütte" was taken over on May 1, 1991 by Heinz Glas GmbH & Co. KG from Kleintettau. The local glassworks has been family-owned since 1661, the company owner is a direct descendant of the glassworks founder von Piesau (Hans Heinz) from 1622. Among other things, high-quality flacons for the perfume industry are produced there. As a result, glass production still shapes the entire place today.

In 2008, following the demolition of the disused “Lower Hut”, a health center was opened at the same location, which serves as accommodation for 2 doctors, an optician, a nursing service and a café. The remaining area of the former “Lower Hut” has been redesigned as a “Glasmacherpark” park with a playground. A monument erected in 2009 still reminds of the glass production at this place.

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Piesau was incorporated as a district into the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg and thus moved from the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district to the Sonneberg district.
