The hamlet with 25 residents (as of 2012) was first mentioned in a document in 1781. From the 18th century onwards, several mills were built on the site. The Mühlengrund was named after a mill owner Neumannsgrund in the 19th century. Gold mining played a major role in the upper Grümpental in the 16th century. The place belonged to Steinheid since the middle of the 19th century , about one kilometer northeast. As part of Steinheid, Limbach was incorporated into the town of Neuhaus am Rennweg on December 1, 2011.
