course
The Grümpen rises with several source streams between the places Siegmundsburg and Steinheid in the Thuringian Slate Mountains near the Rennsteig on the slopes of the Dürre Fichte and Kieferle mountains . After the confluence of its source brooks it flows through the Neumannsgrund , which after the tributary of the left (eastern) Steinbach it merges into the Theuerer Grund . Both form a gorge-like valley towards the southwest, which they share with the road from Steinheid to Schalkau .
The valley opens near the village of Theuern . Gold was panned here in the Grümpen. It was considered to be one of the rivers with the richest gold in Germany, which the Theuern Gold Museum reminds of today .
South of Theuern, the Grümpen flows through the hilly, partly wooded hinterland of Sonneberg and the towns of Rauenstein , Grümpen and Selsendorf , before it joins the Itz in Almerswind .
